In order to accommodate seven out of nine "rebel" NCP members, the Maharashtra administration has appointed new Guardian Ministers for 12 districts. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar took over Pune from BJP’s Chandrakant Patil, who has been given the responsibility of Amravati and Solapur.
The Akola district in Vidarbha, which had previously been under the control of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, was given to Revenue Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil.
Anil Patil, Relief and Rehabilitation Minister for the NCP, will serve as the guardian minister for Nandurbar, and Vijaykumar Gavit, a former guardian minister for the BJP, will now be in charge of Bhandara in Vidarbha.
Senior NCP leader and Cooperation Minister Dilip Walse-Patil will be the guardian minister of Buldhana in Vidarbha while Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif will look after his home district of Kolhapur.
Gondia will be represented by Food and Drug Administration Minister Dharmaraobaba Atram, while the districts of Beed and Parbhani in Marathwada will be represented by Agriculture Minister Dhananjay Munde and Youth and Sports Development Minister Sanjay Bansode, respectively.
Forest Department Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar from the BJP will handle Wardha district in Vidarbha.
Seven out of nine NCP ministers have been given district guardian responsibilities, except senior minister Chhagan Bhujbal and the only woman minister in the cabinet, Aditi Tatkare. Both hail from Nashik and Raigad districts, respectively.
The guardian minister's responsibility is to provide the district with individualised attention and support while collaborating with the district collector and other officials to meet local issues and foster development.
The announcement of Guardian Ministers had been delayed amid shifting political equations in the state. The latest change came in July as Pawar and eight MLAs joined the Shiv Sena-BJP government. Following the rejig there are now seven NCP lawmakers who have been entrusted with the care of different regions.
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) joining the alliance is seen as improving the NDA’s chances of winning most of the 48 Lok Sabha seats.
