Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced a major relief for commuters, declaring that light motor vehicles will no longer be charged at five key toll plazas on the routes leading into Mumbai. The toll exemption, which applies to vehicles like cars, rickshaws, and taxis, will be implemented at the toll booths in Dahisar, Mulund, Vashi, Airoli, and Tinhath Naka starting from midnight tonight.
This significant decision was taken during the Maharashtra government's last cabinet meeting ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. The exemption is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters who regularly enter the city from surrounding areas. These toll plazas have long been a crucial part of Mumbai's transportation system, with large volumes of traffic passing through every day.
Addressing the media, CM Shinde said, "From midnight, commuters using light motor vehicles will no longer have to pay tolls at these five booths." He emphasised that this decision would ease the burden on daily travellers and reduce costs for those who frequently commute between Mumbai and neighbouring regions.
The timing of this decision is crucial as it comes in the lead-up to the Assembly elections, and it is likely to be welcomed by voters, particularly those who regularly face traffic and toll charges at these entry points. With this move, the state government aims to enhance convenience for residents and demonstrate its commitment to addressing public concerns.
In addition to the toll waiver, the cabinet expressed deep sorrow over the recent death of former state minister Baba Siddique. The government passed a condolence resolution in his memory during the meeting, reflecting on his contributions to the state.
This toll waiver and the state’s response to Siddique’s death mark significant developments as Maharashtra heads towards the elections.
