On 25th June, the Madhya Pradesh government announced a significant policy change requiring state ministers to personally pay their income tax, a responsibility previously shouldered by the state government.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav stated that the cabinet has decided to abolish the 1972 rule which mandated the state government to cover the income tax on ministers' salaries and perks. This move is part of a broader effort to ensure greater financial responsibility and accountability among state officials.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced that the cabinet has decided all ministers will be responsible for paying their income tax on their salaries and allowances. According to the news agency PTI, State Urban Administration Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya mentioned that during the cabinet meeting, the chief minister suggested that the ministers should pay their own income tax.
The suggestion was accepted, leading to the decision, he said. This decision from Madhya Pradesh follows a similar move by the Assam government, which, in an effort to end VIP culture, announced that ministers and government officials would have to pay for their own electricity consumption.
Additionally, he emphasised the state's dedication to energy conservation by launching a program that automatically disconnects electricity in all government offices at 8 p.m., with the exception of the Chief Minister Secretariat, and the Home and Finance Departments.
This initiative underscores the government's commitment to reducing energy consumption and promoting sustainable practices within its operations.
