Love Jihad is NOT a hateful propaganda from Hindus in India; Christians in Egypt, Buddhists in Myanmar and Jews in Israel—distinct religions from different countries accuse Islam of exploiting interfaith marriage as a weapon to convert non-Muslims to Islam. Many in European countries, including Sikhs in UK have raised the issue of Muslim men deceiving, blackmailing and sexually exploiting young girls from their communities.
Egypt, a Sunni Muslim dominated country with Islamic law and Sharia courts, has largest Christian population in the greater region of the Middle East and North Africa.
Marilyn, a 16-year-old Coptic Christian girl from a village several hundred kilometers south of Cairo was kidnapped to be 'converted to Islam, then married off or sold.' She was recovered later in a city just outside Cairo.
One victim Mary Wahib, 18, was snatched from her home in the village of Bait Alaam at gunpoint by four masked men. Four days later Mary appeared in a video on Facebook saying: "I bear witness there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is his messenger." She claimed she had not been kidnapped and decided to convert to Islam.
In a similar incident a 19-year-old Amal Shaky was snatched on her way to Cairo University. These are girls as young as 12 who are being grabbed off Egyptian streets. Photos are taken while the girl is being raped to blackmail her into converting, says Mary Abdelmassih, a Coptic activist. Married women in their twenties have also been taken captive and families have complained that the local police have failed to help them track down their loved ones.
The kidnapper portrays how the promise of romance is often used to entice the girls into trouble. A charming young Muslim man flatters and flirts with a Christian girl, telling her that he’s in love with her. He often promises to convert to Christianity. The young girl is captivated. Her lover seductively reveals his spontaneous plan for them to run away together. She agrees. And that’s when she is captured.
This is precisely what happened to Marilyn — and hundreds of other young women.
What the girls don’t know is that they are actually being kidnapped. Most of the time they will not marry their kidnapper but someone else."
A candid testimony, describes how such crimes are carried out. "'A group of kidnappers meets in a mosque to discuss potential victims," he explains. "They keep a close eye on Christians’ houses and monitor everything that’s going on. On that basis, they weave a spider’s web around [the girls] . . . '"
The reason Gahiji, a former Egyptian trafficker, knows these details is because he was once part of such a network that actively targeted Coptic girls to bring them into Islam.
"I remember a Coptic girl from a rich well-known family in Minya," He recalls, "She was kidnapped by five Muslim men. They held her in a home, stripped her and filmed her naked. In the video, one of them also undressed. They threatened to make the video public if the girl wouldn’t marry him."
Many girls, too are handed over to extremists. "The Salafist group I knew rented apartments in different areas of Egypt to hide kidnapped Coptic girls. There they put them under pressure and threaten them to convert to Islam. And once they reach the legal age, an Islamic official comes in to legally change their religion to Islam," Gahiji explains.
If all goes according to plan, the girls are also forced into marriage with a strict Muslim. However, their husbands don’t love them, they marry purely to convert more women to Islam. "She will be hit and humiliated. And if she tries to escape, or convert back to her original religion, she will be killed."
"The most shocking thing is that when some girls are forced to marry, they find out that they are a second wife and are treated like animals. Some are sent to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf to work as domestic servants and they are exploited sexually and are seriously physically abused."
An anonymous researcher confirms Gahiji’s stories as well. "This is something that happens in Egypt almost on a daily basis. But in 80% of cases, families prefer not to speak publicly to avoid shame which will make their other daughters less eligible to find a good marriage partner."
Gahiji confirms that the aim of the kidnapping network is to strengthen Islam and weaken Christianity. "The networks have tens of thousands of members and are financed by wealthy Muslims, mostly from Saudi Arabia. Sometimes they also loot or steal from Christian companies to finance their plans."
The kidnappers, the Coptic priest who has spent the last ten years trying to get such kidnap victims back explains, tend to target the most vulnerable: "They choose who already experience problems in their families. For instance, those who have an absent father. They are an easy target." He hopes girls in his community find love both at home and in their church, which makes them less vulnerable.
However, the ongoing nightmare in Egypt has gone virtually unnoticed. Parents fall silent. Authorities turn a blind eye. And religiously-motivated kidnappings are also extremely difficult to document. Too often the parents themselves don’t know precisely how their daughters were taken from them. The most common story is that the Christian girl has fallen in love with a young Muslim man, and the two have run away together. In the process, she has "chosen to convert."
One lawyer interviewed involved in an Egyptian abductor-conversion case stated:
The same man's name occurred in multiple police reports. He married five Christian women who subsequently were forced to convert to Islam. So he would marry one, take her away, go back, work on another, get her converted, go back, work on another and systematically pursue a number of forced conversions.
Magdi Khalil provides greater details on the situation faced by Coptic minority in Egypt, while writing on the subject "The mixed marriage between Muslims and Christians":
The mixed marriage between Muslims and Christians in Egypt is one of the ways in which the Coptic minority is being exhausted and also a way of violating religious and political freedom. While customs, culture and the media, with all of the means available to it, promote marriage between Christian women and Muslim men, the opposite is very strongly opposed. Anyone who tries to write about this issue in an objective way subjects himself to criticism from the Islamists.
There, only marriage between a Christian or Jewish woman and a Muslim man is allowed. The other way round is not allowed. In Egypt, this unjust and unequal marriage is a kind of religious war. In a very limited number of such marriages, the Muslim husband respects the beliefs of his wife. However, most cases result in the non-Muslim wife converting to Islam under emotional or family pressures and threats. In other cases, the Christian wife remains a Christian in name only. Her Muslim family (her children, husband and his family) are ashamed to admit that she is a Christian, as if this is shameful.
Myanmar is India’s neighbouring country with 88% Buddhist population. The country recently came in the news owing to the issue of her 4% Muslim Rohingya population.
In 2014 lawmakers in Myanmar passed contentious legislation that imposes restrictions on interfaith marriages in the predominantly Buddhist country, despite opposition from rights advocates who say it discriminates against women and Muslims.
The four bills are based on a petition presented by a group of nationalist Buddhist monks calling for curbs on interfaith marriage and religious conversions, among other measures. "This law was written for Myanmar Buddhist women who marry men from other religions so they have equal rights in marriage, divorce, inheritance and taking care of children, as well as have effective protection," said Saw Hla Tun, a member of parliament's Draft Law Committee.
The law was the result of the numerous instances of Muslim men kidnapping, converting and forcing young Buddhist girls to marry or become sex slaves.
Here is a local news from 2011:
A gang of Bengali-Muslims kidnapped a Burmese Buddhist girl on November 6, 2011, in Hpa-an, the capital of Karen State, in lower-eastern Burma/Myanmar. She was raped and forced to convert to Islam in a ceremony involving stepping on pictures of the Buddha, and desecrating a statue of the Buddha, and then forced to marry the rapist and leader of the gang, 'Hussein-by Arkar Naing', at an illegal Sharia Court.
Burmese and Thai authorities were led to the camp hide-out by a Thai Buddhist monk who became aware of the situation. Because of his bravery in quietly gathering the information needed to rescue the girl without harm, the kidnapped Buddhist girl was rescued from the fanatical bigoted Muslim criminals.
Amazingly, instead of feeling sympathy for her, and allowing her to choose what religion to follow, and allowing her to choose when and who to marry, many Muslims there believe it's not wrong to force to convert to Islam, and force to marry her rapist.
Here is another news report:
Rape, Humiliation, Threats, Blackmail, Sexual Slavery, Shame: these are just a few of the things that a 14 year-old Burmese Buddhist girl experienced at the hands of a 42 year-old Bengali Muslim man. He is 3 times older than her. They both live in the South-Okalapa township of Yangon. When 10 years old, she had started learning how to sew at the house and sweatshop owned by the Muslim man. His name is Aryut Saw Lwin and he has a young wife named War War Shwe - who was previously a Burmese Christian - but was coercively converted to Islam upon their marriage. In April of 2012, she (then, barely 14) was taken to a cinema by Aryut and molested inside the dark cinema. She was then given some cash and persuaded not to tell anyone. Soon after that, the Aryut took the poor innocent Buddhist girl to a guesthouse in Taung-thone-lone and forcefully raped her. She admitted to the Buddhist monks that after that rape he told her that he loved her and that he would eventually marry her. Aryut has 6 young girls working for him at his sweat-shop. Three are Muslim girls and three are young Burmese Buddhist girls and no one really knows how many of them have already become his young sex-slaves.
One more similar story:
Ju Ju was a 19-year-old tenth-grader Burmese-Buddhist girl from the Mar-la-kar-gyan Ward of Maha-aung-myay Township in Mandalay. Her parents U Johnny and Daw Win Kyi were dead and she had to live with her old grandmother Daw Ahmar. Older Muslim man Sharban (a) Than Min Oo who lived nearby was a married man with wives and children but he kept them somewhere else so that he could pretend to be bachelor. Ju Ju knew him but not that well and she didn’t know he was a Muslim kalar. One day on her way to a private tuition class, Sharban offered her ride on the bike as "he was going in same direction". She was kidnapped, raped and later made a Muslim wife of the Muslim man who might already have 3 wives and ten children all half-breed Muslims. Sherban told her that he got 500,000 kyats from the Imams from Panset Mosque. Apparently the Muslim Imams in Burma have set rewards paid to Muslim men who manage to marry Burmese-Buddhist girls and convert them to Islam. Imams have priced Burmese-Buddhist girls according to their education levels. According to Ju Ju the Burmese girls with high school education like her are priced at 500,000 kyats, the ordinary arts-and-science university graduates at 1,000,000, and the medical-university graduates at 1,500,000 kyats.
Every single year in Burma at least 500-600 Burmese Buddhist girls are converted to Islam by force or by coercion or by bribe. That notorious Saudi Government-funded Al-Rabita (The Muslim World League) has been behind that Islamic drive into Burma. And their thousands of children are becoming Buddhist-hating half-kalar half-Bamar Islamists posing inherent danger to Burma and Burmese people.
In Israel—the only country in the world with Jewish majority and 18% Muslim population— Jews oppose mixed marriages between Jewish women and Arab men.
Many Israeli Jews oppose mixed relationships, particularly relationships between Jewish women and non-Jewish Arab men. A 2007 opinion survey found that more than half of Israeli Jews believed intermarriage is equivalent to "national treason". A group of 35 Jewish men, known as "Fire for Judaism", in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Pisgat Ze'ev started patrolling the neighborhood in an effort to stop Jewish women from dating Arab men. The municipality of Petah Tikva has also announced an initiative to prevent interfaith relationships, providing a telephone hotline for friends and family to "inform" on Jewish girls who date Arab men as well as psychologists to provide counselling. The city of Kiryat Gat launched a school programme in schools to warn Jewish girls against dating local Bedouin men.
In February 2010 Maariv has reported that the Tel Aviv municipality had instituted an official, government-sponsored counseling program to discourage Jewish girls from dating and marrying Arab boys.
The Social Affairs and Social Services Ministry has increased funding for a young women's shelter run by Hemla, a group headed by figures associated with the radical right. According to the organization, the shelter is geared toward "female youths from broken homes who are at risk of shmad" – a Hebrew term that denotes coerced conversion to another religion.
The general perception amongst the municipalities, religious organizations and vigilante groups involved in anti-miscegenation campaigns is predominantly that it is (Jewish) ‘girls’ that are to be protected from (Arab or Muslim) ‘men’. "The problem is always with Jewish girls dating Arab men. The Arab guy comes and buys them things, treats them well. They fall for it. They can’t see what they are doing" says one of the leaders of a group named Fire for Judaism, which works closely with the police and is funded by private donations.
In December 2010 A letter from about 30 prominent rabbis' wives was causing a stir in Israel because it urges Israeli girls not to date Arabs.
The letter said Arab men act polite around Jewish girls and "act as if they really care about you," but it says that's a ruse. The men, it says, even change their Arab names to Hebrew forms like Yossi and Ami in order to get close to the girls.
"This behavior is temporary," the letter says. "As soon as you are in their hands, in their villages under their control, everything becomes different. You can ask dozens of girls who have been there. They will tell you it is all an act.
"As soon as you arrive at the village, your life will never be the same. The attention will be replaced with curses, beatings, and humiliations. Even if you want to leave the village it will be much harder. They won't let you, they will chase you, they won't let you come back."
In Britain, they call it "sex grooming." In the Netherlands, they’re called "Lover Boys." But the phenomenon is the same. A gang of Muslim "Asians" of mostly Pakistani descent seeks out, pursues, chats up and cultivates school girls for sex, turning them into bodies for sale.
A new book is out that contains research that blows away the theory, widely reported in the media, that it’s a tiny minority of Muslim men involved in the rape gangs and then only in one British town, Rotherham.
Author Peter McLaughlin argues in his exhaustive study, "Easy Meat: Inside Britain’s Grooming Gang Scandal," that it’s at least 300 Muslim men who were preying on girls in Rotherham over a 16-year period. And the same type of gangs have been operating in dozens of cities across the United Kingdom, as well as in Muslim areas of the Netherlands and Sweden.
Sometime back, news about a leaflet appeared in UK media. Given out to Muslim men in the town including Luton railway station, the leaflet said "It is easy to take Sikh girl out on a date as they generally like a good drinnk and from there they can be gradually brought in to Islam. We need to send our boys out to bring the Sikh girls into the arms of Islam. The teaching of the great prophet Mohammed must be passed on until the whole world is Islam. The world will only be thus saved." Under the heading ‘For private circulation’ the leaflet advocates converting them by manipulation as same thing the Quran advocates. It adds ‘we call upon our fellow youth to come and join us in our mission for universal and global Islam. The job is big but not impossible.’
‘The task is getting easier as by the day as the Sikh and Hindu girls are not taught much about their religion at all. They have a more westernized upbringing. The school, college and university campuses are ideal places for our youth to carry out their duties in this way.’
Describing other faiths as ‘animalistic’ it even adds that Muslims are more attractive and intelligent than other people which should be helpful in seduction process. Issued by a group calling themselves The Real Khilafah Movement: The Eyes, the Ears, the voice of Islam, it ends with an appeal for money and a chilling warning ‘watch this space’.
The UK Sikh community had been concerned about this issue since the early 1990s. Recently, the mainstream UK media has highlighted the successful arrests of men from Pakistani origin in Rochdale, Oxford and some other cities.
As young as 9 year old girls groomed and sexually abused. Even girls on swings in the park were targeted. One of the victims explained the modus operandi.
"He seemed like a very sweet guy. He made me feel like the center of the attention." He spent may weeks to gain her trust but he had an agenda. She was drugged, raped, photographed naked and blackmailed to have sex with other men, some in 40s and 50s. He hid his identity and appeared Sikh to deceive her but he was Muslim. BBC Inside Out documentary talks of multiple such cases with grooming, blackmailing and prostitution of unsuspecting Sikh girls. After growing concerns in 90s Mohan Singh help set up Sikh Awareness Society (SAS). It has 24 hour help line which gets 5 or 6 calls a week. Sikh girls are targeted because they won’t tell parents and parents won’t report to the authority. If the family of girl moved to other town, the photos were passed to the Muslim gang in that town. Police only took it seriously and helped went multiple evidences were provided.
The issue of love jihad came to wider attention in India since 2009, with claims of widespread conversions in Kerala and Mangalore.
In September 2014, controversial BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj claimed that Muslim boys in madrasas are being motivated for Love Jihad with proposals of rewards of, "Rs 11 lakh for an "affair" with a Sikh girl, Rs 10 lakh for a Hindu girl and Rs 7 lakh for a Jain girl."
India's National shooter Tara Shahdeo in 2014 alleged her husband forced her to convert to Islam and that she was tortured upon her refusal to convert. Her husband was later arrested. One Indian Taekwondo player in 2014 claimed that she was a "victim" of Love Jihad while she was still a minor. Her husband was later arrested for kidnapping and compelling the minor for marriage.
In 2015 Hindu Samhati, an organization fighting for Hindu rights raised the case of Tuktuki Mondal of South 24 Parganas district in the West Bengal. Love Jihad has been an ongoing concern in the West Bengal for long time.
In October 2011 a 14-year-old Christian girl named Nadia, disappeared from her house in one of Cairo’s slums. Nadia’s family accused 48-year-old Ahmed Hammad Ibrahim of kidnapping, they filed an official report at the police station, the public prosecutors started an investigation on the matter and then issued a warrant for the arrest of the man. Only in February 2012 Nadia’s parents knew that their daughter have been forcedly converted to Islam, married Ahmed and was now about to give birth to a baby. In November 2012, even though Nadia was only 15 and Egyptian law forbids girls to marry or convert until they are 18, the investigation authority decided to close the case file after Ahmed’s lawyer provided them with a customary marriage certificate for his client and his minor wife.
The above story of Christian girl Nadia in Cairo has too many similarity to those of many girls in the West Bengal.
In May 2017, the Kerala High Court annulled a marriage of a converted Hindu woman Akhila alias Hadia to a Muslim man Shafeen Jahan. The supreme court ordered the NIA to investigate the issue. The NIA told the Supreme Court that the marriage is not an "isolated incident" and it had detected a "pattern" emerging in Kerala.
The incidences from a few diverse countries have undeniable similarities. Even if some of the details are questioned, the emerging pattern is unmistakable:
- The attacks are not 'lone wolf' type; Muslim groups at local level plan their act, identify vulnerable girls and target them after detailed research on her background.
- Local mosques and wealthy Muslims either finance or incentivize the crime by offering prize money for trapping non-Muslim girls.
- Liberal and secular girls with conservative family background or with some family problem are easier prey.
- Men deceive girls by hiding their Muslim identity, and marital status if already married.
- They entice the girls with charm, flattery, and display of love & care.
- After gaining their confidence, girls are kidnapped, raped and photographed or filmed to be blackmailed.
- Finally the girls get converted and becomes one of the wives of the Muslim man. Unlucky ones are forced into sexual slavery.
In societies with powerful Muslim community but weak law & order, deception prior to kidnapping may be unnecessary. However, in urban and developed places where kidnapping is not possible, the love jihad puts on a veil of interfaith marriage. True interfaith marriage typically suggests a marriage in which both partners remain adherents to their distinct religion. To make this so-called interfaith marriage possible, one partner—generally the wife is forced to give up her religion and convert to that of her husband's. To make the matter worse, poison of the bigotry is passed on to children as well. Instead of learning to respect religions of both the parents, children of such interfaith marriage often end up following only father's faith. The practice has roots in the Sharia law:
Sharia has different regulations on interfaith marriage, depending on which of the two spouses is Muslim. Islamic Law permits a Muslim man to marry up to four non-Muslim women from the People of the Book (that is, Christians and Jews), but they must be chaste and all of the children usually must be brought up Muslim. However, Muslim women are prohibited by Islamic Law from marrying outside of Islam. Marriage between a Muslim woman and a non-Muslim man is possible only on the condition that he accepts Islam completely so that he shall boycott all other faiths and believe only in what Allah says and what is written in Quran. This prohibition serves to preserve and expand the Islamic faith within societies which are patriarchal but multi-faith. Islam is very clear about children also: The child who is born to two Muslim parents is ruled to be a Muslim, according to scholarly consensus. The majority Islamic sects are of the view that what counts is the Islam of one of the parents, whether it is the father or mother, so the children are to be regarded as Muslims, following the parent, because Islam should prevail and not be prevailed over. It effectively ensures that over many generations, Islam would naturally gain in adherents, relative to neighbouring religions, through its ability to secure the adherence of all offspring from mixed marriages.
Many Arab countries allow interfaith marriage to Christian or Jewish women but not to non-Muslim men. In Lebanon for example there is no civil personal law and marriages are performed according to the religion of the spouses. There, Muslim women cannot marry non-Muslim men, whereas Muslim men are allowed to marry non-Muslim women, if she is a Christian or Jewish woman. In Malaysia a non-Muslim must convert to Islam in order to marry a Muslim. The offspring of such unions are automatically Muslims, and all Malaysian Muslims are legally prohibited from leaving Islam.
Two asymmetric rules of Islam can be summarized thus: (1) To marry a Muslim, non-Muslim needs to convert to Islam – and if either parents is Muslim, the child will be Muslim (2) Becoming Muslim is irreversible, as apostasy is the heaviest crime under the religion, sanctioned by the death penalty. Given a small rate of intermarriage, these asymmetric rules are sufficient to tilt the demographic balance over time, feels the author N.N. Taleb. When a religion lives in isolation and remains concentrated, it experiences limited intermarriages but sharing multi-faith society with Islam exposes it to an exogamous conversion war.
