India and Liberia have taken a fresh step to deepen their diplomatic and economic partnership with the opening of Liberia’s resident mission in New Delhi. The Ministry of External Affairs said the new embassy will help strengthen cooperation between the two countries and support a mutually beneficial partnership.

Secretary (Economic Relations) Sudhakar Dalela represented India at the inauguration ceremony on Thursday. The MEA described the opening as an important milestone in India-Liberia relations. It said the new resident mission would further strengthen the countries’ long-standing ties of friendship and cooperation.

The MEA posted on X, “Secretary (Economic Relations) Sudhakar Dalela participated in the inauguration of the new Embassy of the Republic of Liberia in New Delhi. The establishment of the Resident Mission is a significant milestone and further strengthens the close ties of friendship and cooperation between India and Liberia. Committed to working together to advance a mutually beneficial India-Liberia partnership.”

Liberian Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti also arrived in New Delhi on Thursday for talks with Indian officials. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Nyanti to discuss several areas of bilateral cooperation. The talks covered commercial shipping security, healthcare, agriculture, mining, water management and skill development.

Welcoming the Liberian Foreign Minister, the MEA posted on X, “Warmly welcome Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti of Liberia on her arrival in New Delhi. The visit provides an opportunity to further strengthen the warm and close ties between India and Liberia.”

After the bilateral meeting, Jaishankar said he was pleased to meet Nyanti and welcomed the opening of Liberia’s diplomatic mission in New Delhi. He described the discussions as productive and said the two sides exchanged views on several areas of mutual interest.

Jaishankar also said the talks focused on reforms of the United Nations Security Council. He expressed confidence that cooperation between India and Liberia under the broader Global South framework would continue to grow.

He posted on X, “Delighted to meet Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti of Liberia” and extended congratulations on the opening of the diplomatic mission. He added, “Our meeting also focused on much-needed UNSC reforms. Confident that our South-South cooperation will continue to strengthen.”

India and Liberia have also expanded their engagement through parliamentary cooperation and knowledge sharing. Earlier on Tuesday, Jaishankar met a Liberian legislative delegation visiting India as part of an exchange programme. The meeting focused on development initiatives and India’s experience in implementing various welfare and public service schemes.

The visiting delegation included members of the Liberian Senate and House of Representatives. It also included representatives of the Women’s Legislative Caucus of Liberia, led by Ellen-Attoh Wreh, along with delegates from UN Women. The delegation was visiting India under an IBSA-funded peer-learning programme.

Reflecting on the meeting, Jaishankar posted on X, “A pleasure to meet a Parliamentary Delegation from Liberia visiting India for the IBSA-funded peer-learning programme. Exchanged views on development programmes, sharing the experience of Jan-Dhan Yojana, MUDRA Yojana, SVAnidhi, Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana, and Mission Amrit Sarovar. Appreciated their interest and reaffirmed our commitment towards deeper Global South partnership.”

The opening of Liberia’s resident mission in New Delhi comes as India seeks to strengthen its engagement with African countries and build closer partnerships across the Global South. The latest diplomatic and parliamentary engagements highlight the growing focus on cooperation in development, trade, security, healthcare, agriculture and other key sectors.

The two sides emphasised South-South cooperation and UNSC reforms. India has reaffirmed its willingness to work closely with Liberia on shared priorities while supporting greater cooperation among developing countries. The establishment of Liberia’s resident mission in the Indian capital is expected to provide a stronger platform for regular diplomatic engagement and closer bilateral ties.
