Conflicts between security personnel and supporters of a Hindu community leader in Bangladesh resulted in the death of a lawyer on Tuesday. Local media said that the leader had been jailed after being refused bail.
According to the Dhaka Tribune newspaper, Saiful Islam, a 35-year-old assistant public prosecutor and member of the Chattogram District Bar Association, was identified as the victim who fell prey to death. The paper quoted Dr Nibedita Ghosh, a duty physician at Chittagong Medical College Hospital's emergency room, as saying that six more people were hurt in the altercations that broke out after prominent Hindu leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, who had been arrested on sedition charges, was denied bail by Chattogram's Sixth Metropolitan Magistrate court.
The president of the Chittagong Lawyers' Association, Nazim Uddin Chowdhury, claimed that a lawyer was dragged by demonstrators from beneath his chamber and fatally hacked to death. As Das was being taken away in a police van, he spoke to the crowd through a microphone, asking them to stay calm. Around 3 pm, the police used sound grenades, tear gas, and batons to break up the protest and scatter the crowd.
While confirming one death, Liaquat Ali, the deputy commissioner of city police, stated that the cause was still being looked into. At least ten individuals, including journalists, were hurt in the altercation, according to the Daily Star newspaper.
