The first of two advanced frigates, being built by the Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) for the Indian Navy, was launched last evening at GSL, Goa. In a significant milestone, Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) successfully launched the first indigenous P1135.6 Frigate on Tuesday by Mrs. Rita Sreedharan to the invocation from Atharva Veda, in the presence of Goa Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai.
The ship has been named Triput, after the mighty arrow, representing the invincible spirit of the Indian Navy and its ability to hit far and deep. On 25 January 2019, the deal for building two Triput class Advance Frigates was signed between the Ministry of Defence and the Goa Shipyard Limited.
“The launch of Triput is an exemplary testimony of our nation’s warship-building capability and propels GSL into the league of Indian shipyards capable of producing state-of-art frigates for the Indian Navy,” said Pillai, as a Chief Guest during the launch.
The ship is designed for combat operations against enemy surface ships, submarines and aircraft. The length and width of these ships are 124.8 m and 15.2 m, respectively. The draught of the Triput Class ship is 4.5 m and their displacement is about 3600 tons with the speed of a maximum of 28 knots. The ships are equipped with various stealth features, advanced weapons, sensors and platform management systems.
Being built at GSL, the Triput class of ships is a follow-on ship of the Teg and Talwar class ships received from Russia. These frigates are being built for the first time natively by an Indian Shipyard.
On Wednesday, the Defence Ministry said that aligned with the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, a major percentage of the equipment fit, including weapons & sensors are of Indian origin, which ensures that large-scale defence production is done by Indian manufacturing units, generating employment and enhances capability within the country.
