Ladakh Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena inaugurated the world’s highest-altitude twin flower fields at Choglamsar and Stakna in Leh on Thursday. The event coincided with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 76th birthday. Situated at an elevation of nearly 10,600 feet, these twin fields span 40 acres. They showcase over 25 lakh vibrant blooms, featuring 24 lakh Liliums and one lakh Gladioli. This ambitious project aims to boost commercial floriculture, diversify regional agriculture, and offer fresh economic avenues for Ladakh's farming community.

These sites were developed on a fast-track schedule. Workers began planting at the Choglamsar field on July 16, and the site fully developed within two months. The first blooms appeared by early September. Meanwhile, workers planted nearly 14 lakh Lilium bulbs at Stakna during August. The administration expects these plants to bloom fully by the end of October.

This initiative focuses on practical training and long-term economic empowerment. Saxena said, "The initiative is more than just the start of flower cultivation; it is an effort to sow the seeds of new livelihoods, skills, and opportunities for the people of Ladakh." The Choglamsar facility will operate as a dedicated demonstration and training centre. Local farmers and youth will learn modern cultivation techniques, scientific farming methods, and post-harvest management. The administration plans to expand cultivation of Tulips and other high-demand ornamental flowers. Liliums currently fetch Rs 60-70 per stick in wholesale markets, with retail rates climbing even higher.

The Agriculture Department will manage the initial cultivation phase. Officials will hand over the blooming fields to chosen self-help groups and cooperative societies. The department will also guide these local groups through domestic and international market connections. From the second year onward, these cooperatives will handle commercial cultivation, harvesting, and product processing independently.

Highlighting the sector’s potential, Saxena said, "Floriculture is a high-value agricultural activity that can complement traditional farming, enhance farmers’ incomes and open new avenues for employment and entrepreneurship." The initiative capitalises on Ladakh’s unique climate to tap into the growing demand for premium cut flowers. Strong results at these initial locations could spark similar commercial projects across the Union Territory.

Beyond economic benefits, these colourful fields offer scenic recreational spaces for both locals and travellers. These sites open to the public on September 18. Visitors will pay an entry fee of Rs 25 for adults and Rs 10 for children. The local management will use this ticket revenue directly for garden maintenance and upkeep.
