The Ladakh administration has created five new tehsils and redefined 31 revenue villages across five districts of the Union Territory through a notification issued by the Revenue Department on Friday.
Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena announced on X that he had approved the creation of the new tehsils. The move aims to strengthen grassroots administration and improve public service delivery.
The notification, issued on October 16 by Commissioner-Secretary Revenue Shurbir Singh under Section 5 of the Jammu and Kashmir Land Revenue Act, 1996, follows earlier orders dated April 27 and July 12, 2026.
In Sham district, Aryan Valley tehsil will have its headquarters at Dha-Bema and include four revenue villages: Dha-Bema, Hanu, Garkone and Darchiks.
In Kargil district, Sodh tehsil will be headquartered at Yourbaltak. It will comprise eight revenue villages: Yourbaltak, Akchamal, Apatee, Tumail, Barchey, Silmoo, Lalung and Chulichan.
Phey tehsil in Zanskar district will be headquartered at Phey and cover nine revenue villages: Rangdum, Phey, Remala-Skagam, Hamiling, Abran, Akshow, Atting, Rantaksha, and Tungri.
In Drass district, Thasgam tehsil will be headquartered at Thasgam and include four revenue villages: Thasgam, Jasgund, Kharboo and Shamisha.
Himya tehsil in Changthang district will have its headquarters at Himya. It will comprise six revenue villages: Tukla, Liktse, Tarchit, Kungyam, Teri and Himya.
The administration has also ordered the reconstitution of certain existing tehsils. The specified revenue villages will cease to fall under their current tehsils and become part of the newly constituted tehsils once the notification takes effect.
In a separate decision, the administration assigned the powers of the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Durbuk, to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Durbuk, responding to a long-standing public demand. The decision aims to strengthen local administration, improve access to administrative services and ensure timely delivery of public services to Durbuk residents.
The notification will come into force from the date of its publication in the official Gazette. Saxena said the decisions align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of an inclusive, developed Ladakh.
