Ladakh has become India’s first 100% organic Union Territory, with Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena announcing the milestone in recognition of farmers’ efforts and the administration’s push for chemical-free farming.
The achievement marks a major step towards protecting Ladakh’s fragile Himalayan ecosystem, improving soil and water health, raising farmers’ incomes and promoting healthier food production.
The transition follows a multi-year initiative to eliminate synthetic fertilisers, chemical pesticides and harmful soil additives from farming across the Union Territory. The move is expected to improve soil fertility, conserve water resources and protect biodiversity.
In July 2026, Saxena ordered a complete ban on the procurement, distribution, sale, marketing and use of chemical and synthetic fertilisers in Ladakh. The decision aimed to safeguard organic certification, protect natural resources and ensure the long-term sustainability of agriculture.
The organic status is expected to create new opportunities for farmers growing apricots, sea buckthorn, buckwheat, barley and vegetables. An official said, "Organic certification, better post-harvest management, value addition, branding and stronger market linkages can help farmers access consumers who increasingly seek authentic, traceable and organically produced food."
Congratulating farmers and other stakeholders, Saxena called the achievement a moment of immense pride for Ladakh and the country.
"Our farmers have demonstrated that environmentally responsible agriculture can flourish even in the most challenging geographical conditions," he said.
Saxena said the milestone also reflects a commitment to protecting Ladakh’s Himalayan ecosystem, preserving traditional farming practices and improving farmers’ livelihoods. He stressed the need to ensure that organic certification delivers tangible economic benefits to the farming community.
"Our goal is to ensure that the organic status of Ladakh brings real value to our farmers through better market access, improved price realisation and sustainable livelihoods," Saxena said.
He also expressed hope that Ladakh’s achievement would encourage other states and Union Territories to adopt sustainable farming practices suited to their geographical conditions and agricultural traditions.
