Kuwait on Thursday reported that it faced a missile and drone attack as tensions linked to the Iran conflict continued to rise despite a fragile ceasefire. The announcement was made by Kuwait’s military, though it did not provide details about what was targeted or the extent of the damage. No casualties were immediately reported. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
The latest development has once again raised concerns about stability in West Asia. Kuwait had repeatedly faced attacks during the conflict from Iran and Iran-backed Shiite militias operating in Iraq. The fresh attack comes at a time when the ceasefire between Iran and its rivals remains uncertain and diplomatic talks between Tehran and Washington continue without a major breakthrough.
The situation around the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the biggest concerns globally. The waterway, located at the entrance of the Persian Gulf, is considered one of the world’s most important energy routes. Around one-fifth of globally traded oil and natural gas once passed through the strait. The route has not yet reopened fully despite ongoing negotiations, adding to fears of a prolonged global energy crisis.
Experts have warned that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz could worsen fuel shortages and increase pressure on international markets in the coming weeks. The uncertainty has already affected energy supply chains and raised concerns among major oil-importing countries.
At the same time, negotiations between the United States and Iran remain tense. Washington is pushing Tehran to surrender its stockpile of highly enriched uranium. Iran, on the other hand, is demanding relief from economic sanctions and the release of frozen financial assets. Iranian officials believe the removal of sanctions is necessary to help rebuild the country’s struggling economy, which has suffered heavily due to years of restrictions and the recent conflict.
Earlier on Thursday, US officials said American forces intercepted multiple Iranian drones near the Strait of Hormuz. According to the officials, US Central Command forces shot down four Iranian one-way attack drones that were considered a threat in the area. The officials were not authorised to speak publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity.
The US military also carried out a strike on an Iranian ground control station in Bandar Abbas. Officials said the station was preparing to launch a fifth drone at the time of the attack. Bandar Abbas is a strategically important city located near the Strait of Hormuz and is home to military as well as civilian infrastructure.
Iran later acknowledged the strike by its paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, state-run IRNA news agency reported. Iranian authorities confirmed that the attack took place around Bandar Abbas International Airport, which serves both civilian and military purposes.
Iran also claimed that it launched a retaliatory attack against the air base involved in the US operation. However, Tehran did not provide further details about the target or the impact of the retaliation. It also remains unclear whether the reported attack on Kuwait was directly linked to Iran’s response to the American strike.
The latest incidents have deepened fears that the ceasefire may not hold for long. With military activity continuing around the Strait of Hormuz and tensions between Iran and the United States still high, the region remains on edge as the world closely watches the next steps from both sides.
