Members of Kuki organisations held a rally on Tuesday in Churachandpur, carrying symbolic coffins to commemorate those from their community who lost their lives during the unrest in Manipur. Hundreds participated, holding placards that called for justice for the deceased and demanded a separate administration for the hill areas.
The rally comes in the aftermath of an encounter on November 11 in Jiribam, where ten militants were killed by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Civil Police. A CRPF constable sustained a bullet injury during the operation and is currently under treatment. Security forces recovered arms and ammunition from the encounter site, according to a press release from the Manipur Police.
On Monday, several Manipur MLAs passed a resolution addressing the escalating violence in the state. The resolution called on the central government to review the imposition of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the region. It also demanded a mass operation to be launched within seven days against Kuki militants, who have been blamed for the killing of six civilians, including women and children, in Jiribam.
Additionally, the resolution proposed transferring three key cases to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). These cases involve the burning death of a woman, the killing of six civilians, and the murder of a woman farmer. The MLAs also urged that Kuki militants deemed responsible for the killings be declared an "unlawful organisation" within a week.
"If the above resolutions taken are not implemented within the specified period, all the NDA legislators will decide the future course of action in consultation with the people of the State," the statement from the Chief Minister’s Secretariat read. The resolution assured that both central and state governments would take necessary steps to restore normalcy in Manipur.
The meeting of ruling MLAs also addressed recent attacks on legislators and the burning of their properties. The resolution strongly condemned such actions, describing them as "barbaric." It called for legal action against those responsible, based on findings from a High-Powered Committee.
In response to the ongoing violence, the Manipur government initially suspended internet services in seven districts. On Monday, the government announced an extension of the suspension until 5:15 PM on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. The affected districts include Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Thoubal, and Churachandpur.
The unrest in Manipur began on May 3 last year, following violent clashes during a rally organised by the All Tribal Students Union (ATSU). The protest was against the demand for the inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe category.
As tensions remain high in the state, efforts are being made by both the central and state governments to address the escalating violence and restore peace.
