On September 21, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) initiated questioning of another doctor who is reportedly close to Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This inquiry is part of the ongoing investigation into the tragic rape and murder of a junior doctor that occurred on August 9 at the hospital. The CBI is pursuing various leads to uncover the details surrounding this shocking incident.
Dr. Birupaksha Biswas, who was recently transferred by the West Bengal government from Burdwan Medical College and Hospital to Kakdwip Hospital in the South 24 Parganas district, appeared before CBI officers at the agency's CGO Complex office in the Salt Lake area of Kolkata, according to PTI reports. His appearance comes as part of the investigation into the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, as the CBI continues to gather information related to the case.
A CBI officer stated, “He is being questioned about his presence at RG Kar Hospital on August 9 despite having no official engagement.” The officer also noted that Dr. Biswas is associated with a so-called North Bengal lobby that operates within the state's medical colleges. This questioning is part of the broader investigation aimed at uncovering details surrounding the junior doctor’s tragic rape and murder.
According to medical professionals, the "North Bengal lobby" is a network of doctors and officials accused of intimidating students at government-run medical institutions in West Bengal. Dr. Biswas, along with two other doctors, Avik De and Ranjit Saha, has been named in an FIR for allegedly threatening students across various medical colleges and hospitals in the state. This development has raised serious concerns about the environment within these institutions, particularly in light of the ongoing investigation into the tragic case of the junior doctor.
The three doctors have been charged under Section 351 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, the new penal code, which addresses assault through gestures or preparations that lead someone to believe they are about to face criminal force. This legal action highlights the seriousness of the allegations against them and the broader concerns regarding intimidation within the medical community in West Bengal.
Dr. Ghosh, who was removed from his position at RG Kar Medical College and subsequently suspended, is under investigation by the CBI for his alleged involvement in financial irregularities at the institute. He is also being scrutinised for delaying the filing of the FIR in the rape and murder case by “at least 14 hours.” Furthermore, there are suspicions that he may be part of a conspiracy aimed at destroying evidence related to the case, adding another layer of complexity to the investigation.
