On Tuesday, Kolkata Police enforced Section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, at nine strategic locations across the city, including Rani Rashmoni Avenue near RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This measure aims to prevent unlawful gatherings of five or more people as part of efforts to maintain order during the Immersion Carnival on Red Road.
In an official statement, Kolkata Police emphasised the need for this action, stating, “It is necessary for preventing danger, obstruction or inconvenience to the public in connection with the Maa Durga idols visarjan on Red Road, Kolkata, on October 15.” The order, effective from October 14, prohibits rallies, processions, demonstrations, and the carrying of weapons that could incite violence. Individuals violating this order will face legal consequences under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Kolkata’s Commissioner of Police, Manoj Kumar Verma, who also serves as an Executive Magistrate, has taken a firm stance to ensure public safety. This enforcement follows a court directive dated October 11, which prohibits any disruption of the carnival, a significant annual event organized by the government.
Additionally, police anticipate a planned protest dubbed "Droho Carnival" near Rani Rashmoni Avenue, warning that it could lead to large-scale disturbances and a breach of public peace. The enforcement of Section 163 is aimed at ensuring that the Immersion Carnival proceeds smoothly, allowing the city to celebrate without any disruptions or threats to safety. This initiative highlights the authorities' commitment to maintaining order during significant public events in Kolkata.
