According to reports from state media KCNA, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has expressed his intention to "hold hands" with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a bid to enhance strategic cooperation. The statement was made by Kim in a message sent to Putin on the occasion of Russia's National Day. As per reports, Kim defended his decision to invade Ukraine and emphasized "full support and solidarity" between the two leaders.
"Justice is sure to win and the Russian people will continue to add glory to the history of victory," Kim said in the message published by KCNA.
Kim called for "closer strategic cooperation" with Moscow, "holding hands firmly with the Russian president, in conformity with the common desire of the peoples of the two countries to fulfill the grand goal of building a powerful country," it added.
In a recurring display of admiration, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently conveyed his heartfelt sentiments to Russian President Vladimir Putin. In a letter sent in May, Kim lauded Russia's ongoing struggle against what he referred to as "imperialists," hailing it as a "holy fight." The letter expressed warm wishes to Putin, the Russian army, and the people of Russia for their unwavering dedication to upholding global peace.
The relationship between Kim and Putin, which emerged in an unexpected manner following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, has garnered attention. The Kremlin's efforts to strengthen this bond have become evident. Recently, Russia and China disregarded a US request in the UN Security Council to condemn North Korea's satellite launch, instead placing blame on Washington for escalating tensions in the Korean Peninsula.
The White House claimed earlier this year that it has evidence of Russia procuring weapons from North Korea for the Ukrainian conflict. In return, Russia allegedly provides food and water to the crisis-stricken country. According to White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby, Russia, facing sanctions, seeks unconventional means to support its war efforts. The proposed deal involves Russia receiving various weapons and munitions from Pyongyang, with reports suggesting Russia's offer of food in exchange for munitions. Despite North Korea's advancements in its missile program, Putin and Moscow have remained supportive.
