An Indian Army soldier was found dead with gunshot wounds after being kidnapped by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district, police sources reported on Wednesday. On October 8, the Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police launched an anti-terror operation that resulted in the kidnapping of two soldiers from the Anantnag forest area.
The soldiers were members of the 161 unit of the Territorial Army. However, one of them managed to escape despite having two gunshot wounds. The second soldier was discovered dead with bullet wounds throughout his body on October 9 during a search operation, in the Pathribal forest area of Anantnag. According to sources, the wounded soldier's condition is stable after he was rushed to a hospital for necessary care.
The event transpired on the day of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly poll vote counting. Indian Army's Srinagar-based Chinar Core briefed about the incident in a post on X, writing, “Based on intelligence input, a joint counter-terrorist operation was launched by the Indian Army along with Jammu and Kashmir Police and other agencies in Kazwan Forest in Kokernag on October 8. The operation continued overnight as one soldier of the Territorial Army was reported missing.”
A confrontation between security forces and terrorists in Anantnag earlier this August resulted in the deaths of two more soldiers and the injuries of three more. Before this, a confrontation with heavily armed terrorists in the Doda district claimed the lives of four Army soldiers and one police officer. The 'Kashmir Tigers,' a front organisation for the Pakistan-backed Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), claimed responsibility for the attack.
