Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun has issued threats against Hindu temples, including the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. In a video released by the banned Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) group, Pannun warned of an attack on November 16 and 17. The video, allegedly recorded in Brampton, Canada, seeks to incite violence against Hindu places of worship.
Pannun directly threatened one of India's holiest places when he declared, "We will shake the foundations of Ayodhya, birthplace of the violent Hindutva ideology." In the video, Prime Minister Modi can be seen praying in the Ram Temple during its inauguration in January. Additionally, Pannun has cautioned Indians in Canada about Khalistani attacks on Hindu temples.
Pannun issued a warning to travellers last month not to board Air India flights from November 1 through November 19. Pannun asserted that the time frame aligned with the "Sikh genocide" of 1984, which he described as its 40th anniversary. Pannun has also incited violence against Indian diplomats, suggesting a larger effort to stir unrest and tension among both Indian and expatriate communities. Pannun's SFJ has been engaged in numerous activities against India, advocating for the creation of a separate Sikh state. He has made multiple provocative statements aimed at disrupting communal harmony.
Pannun was declared a terrorist under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in July 2020, and the Indian government has issued several arrest warrants against him. Despite this, he continues to operate from the United States and Canada. In recent years, there has been a rise in attacks on Hindu temples and threats against the Hindu community in Canada, particularly from radical Khalistani groups. This has also led to an increase in acts of vandalism, hate messages on temple walls, and public threats directed at the community.
Just last week, pro-Khalistani demonstrators clashed with worshippers at the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton and disrupted a consular event that was co-organised by the temple authorities and the Indian Consulate. Despite India's repeated concerns, Canadian authorities have responded weakly to pro-Khalistani activities. India has called for more decisive actions to address radical elements, but Canadian responses have often been perceived as inadequate. This issue has been a key factor in the growing tension between India and Canada.
