Amid Diwali celebrations in Brampton, Ontario, a viral video captured disturbances as groups displaying Khalistani flags allegedly disrupted the event. Accusations include stone-throwing and gate-crashing by these groups, prompting concerns.
Law enforcement initially categorized the disturbance as an "internal community fight." However, as the situation escalated, concerns regarding public safety emerged. In the video footage, police are seen actively recording individuals and attempting to prevent the throwing of stones. The disruptive actions of the groups waving Khalistani flags prompted increased scrutiny and calls for a comprehensive response to maintain order during community celebrations.
“It is very unfortunate to hear about the attack on Hindus celebrating Diwali in Brampton, Canada,” expressed someone in a comment. It is especially troubling that the incident is being minimized by the Canadian media, which refers to it as a “fight between Sikhs & Hindus.” This attack was obviously motivated by hostility toward religion.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau extended warm wishes to the Hindu and Sikh communities in Canada and worldwide, offering heartfelt greetings on the occasions of Diwali and Bandi Chhor Diwas. "Diwali and Bandi Chhor Diwas are all about coming together. To everyone we’ve celebrated with in Ottawa, Brampton, and Etobicoke over the past few days, and to everyone celebrating in communities across the country: Happy Diwali! Happy Bandi Chhor Diwas!" Trudeau said in a social media post on X.
Meanwhile, India has proposed that Canada bolster defenses against attacks on places of worship and effectively combat hate speech, marking a significant diplomatic initiative.
Bandi Chhor Diwas is a significant Sikh festival that marks the liberation of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, the sixth Guru of Sikhism, from imprisonment in Gwalior Fort. Translated as "Prisoner Release Day," this celebration usually aligns with the Hindu festival of Diwali but holds distinct historical and cultural importance in the Sikh tradition.
Canada hosts a substantial Sikh community, primarily concentrated in provinces such as British Columbia, Ontario, and Alberta. For over a century, Sikhs have been immigrating to Canada, contributing significantly to the country's cultural, economic, and social landscape.
