Amid concerns over a shortage of LPG cylinders in several parts of the country, the central government has permitted the temporary distribution of kerosene in 21 states and Union Territories. This decision comes as a short-term measure to ease the pressure on households facing difficulties in accessing cooking gas. The move reflects the urgency of the situation, especially in areas where supply disruptions have created inconvenience for consumers.
Officials explained that the supply of kerosene, which had been gradually phased out in many regions due to increased LPG coverage, will now be reintroduced on a temporary basis. This step is aimed at ensuring that households, particularly those dependent on subsidised fuel, do not face hardship during the current supply constraints. The government has clarified that this is not a reversal of policy but only a stopgap arrangement until normal LPG distribution is restored.
The issue of LPG shortage has been linked to logistical challenges and supply chain disruptions. Delays in transportation and distribution have impacted the availability of cylinders in certain areas. As a result, many consumers have experienced longer waiting times for refills. The temporary use of kerosene is expected to provide immediate relief while efforts are underway to stabilise the LPG supply.
According to officials, states and Union Territories have been advised to ensure that kerosene distribution is carried out smoothly and reaches the intended beneficiaries. The allocation will be monitored closely to avoid misuse or diversion. Authorities are also working to balance the distribution so that it complements the existing LPG supply rather than replacing it entirely.
An official stated, “This is a temporary measure to tide over the current situation.” The government has emphasised that LPG remains the primary cooking fuel under its clean energy initiatives, and efforts will continue to strengthen its supply network. The reintroduction of kerosene is being treated strictly as an emergency response.
The move has also highlighted the continued importance of having alternative fuel options in times of crisis. While LPG has become the dominant cooking fuel in recent years, situations like this underline the need for backup systems to ensure energy security at the household level. The government’s intervention aims to prevent disruption in daily life, especially for lower-income groups who are more vulnerable to such shortages.
Officials further noted that coordination between central and state authorities is crucial to managing the situation effectively. Regular reviews are being conducted to assess the availability of LPG and the impact of kerosene distribution. The focus remains on restoring normalcy as quickly as possible while minimising inconvenience to consumers.
The Centre has assured that all necessary steps are being taken to resolve the supply issues. Efforts are ongoing to streamline logistics and improve delivery timelines. Once the LPG supply stabilises, the temporary kerosene distribution will be withdrawn, and the system will return to its earlier structure.
