Amid controversy over Congress leader Shashi Tharoor’s column in The New Indian Express praising the achievements of Kerala’s CPM-led government, the Congress leadership warned on Friday that members who do not adhere to the party's stance would face consequences.
During a meeting between the Congress leadership and party members from Kerala, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi warned them “not to go against the party line and disrespect the people of Kerala.”
Deepa Dasmunshi, Congress’ Kerala in-charge, emphasised the need for teamwork, discipline, and unity to secure victory in the upcoming local body and Assembly elections. “If anyone says anything personally... we will take strong action,” she stated.
Three leaders, including M.M. Hassan, raised concerns over Tharoor’s public statements. Sources revealed that Rahul expressed his deep emotional connection with the state and its people.
“People are yearning for a change, and we should be careful about our strategies. We should not do anything wrong against the party line,” some sources mentioned him as stating.
AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal stated that no leader has the authority to make inappropriate remarks in the media. At least three leaders, including M M Hassan, criticised Tharoor, accusing him of harming the party with his public statements.
When questioned about whether the censure was aimed at Tharoor, Dasmunshi responded, “Why are you only pinpointing Tharoor? So many others made personal views. It has been told generally to everyone.” She also dismissed any speculation about a leadership change in the state unit, confirming that K Sudhakaran will remain as the president.
