The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) has urged political parties and lawmakers to adopt a fair and constructive stance on land disputes, particularly concerning the ongoing crisis in Munambam, Kerala. More than 600 families in the region face the threat of losing their ancestral properties due to legal battles over land ownership.
CBCI Challenges Waqf Act Provisions
In a statement released on Monday, March 31, the CBCI raised concerns about certain provisions in the Central Waqf Act, arguing that they contradict the Indian Constitution. The Kerala Waqf Board has reportedly invoked these provisions to classify privately owned ancestral properties as Waqf land, leading to an escalating legal dispute that has persisted for the past three years.
The CBCI emphasised that a legal amendment is the only way to provide a lasting solution. "The Waqf Amendment Bill should offer a permanent resolution to land disputes, including those affecting Munambam in Kerala," the statement read. The organisation called on political representatives to take decisive action in addressing these concerns.
Call for Legal Reforms to Protect Land Rights
Beyond advocating for amendments to the Waqf Act, the CBCI urged lawmakers to revise any legislation that contradicts constitutional principles while ensuring the protection of religious minorities' rights. It stressed the importance of restoring rightful land ownership to the residents of Munambam, who have been entangled in legal conflicts over their properties.
National Attention and Political Reactions
The issue has drawn national attention, with Union Minister Kiren Rijiju expressing support for the CBCI’s plea. Sharing their statement on X, Rijiju remarked, "Catholic Bishops Conference of India appeals to Political Parties to support the Waqf Amendment Bill. It is the duty of those in politics to care for and address problems and challenges faced by our people. For example, hundreds of families in Munambam, Kerala, and countless people across India have suffered and continue to seek a solution to protect their properties and homes."
The call for legal reform continues to gain momentum, with stakeholders across the country watching closely to see how political leaders respond to the growing demand for legislative action. The outcome of this debate will have significant implications for property rights and land ownership disputes in India.
