President William Ruto has confirmed the death of Kenya’s military chief in a helicopter crash in the country’s northwest.
General Francis Ogolla, along with nine other individuals, lost their lives in the crash in Elgeyo Marakwet County, approximately 400km (250 miles) northwest of the capital, Nairobi.
The military aircraft, which had been on a visit to troops deployed in northwest Kenya to combat cattle rustling, crashed just minutes after taking off near Cheptulel Boys Secondary School in West Pokot County.
The cause of the crash was not immediately evident. Addressing reporters at a press conference, Ruto expressed profound sorrow over the loss, describing General Ogolla's passing as a significant blow to the nation. He lamented, "Our motherland has lost one of her most valiant generals," emphasising the personal pain he feels at the tragic event.
The president revealed that two soldiers from the crashed helicopter managed to survive and were receiving medical treatment in a hospital. He further informed that an air investigation team had been dispatched to ascertain the cause of the incident.
Prior to his current position, Ogolla served as the head of the Kenyan air force before progressing to the role of deputy military chief. He was promoted by Ruto last year to lead the military.
According to a Ministry of Defence profile, the general enlisted in the military in 1984 and underwent training as a fighter pilot with the United States Air Force. Subsequently, he received further training as an instructor pilot at the Kenyan Air Force.
A year ago, when elevating Ogolla to the highest military position, Ruto accused him of involvement in a scheme to overturn the outcome of the 2022 presidential election. However, Ruto maintained that Ogolla was the most suitable candidate for the role, despite the allegations.
The unrest in northwestern Kenya has resulted in the deaths of numerous civilians and police officers.
In June 2021, a tragic incident occurred when at least 10 soldiers lost their lives as their helicopter crashed during a landing attempt near Nairobi.
