Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), based in Visakhapatnam, witnessed a significant moment in its history on Thursday with the keel laying ceremony of the first Fleet Support Ship (FSS). The ceremony was officiated by Vice Admiral B. Sivakumar, Controller Warship Production & Acquisition of the Indian Navy, highlighting the growing confidence the Navy has in HSL’s ability to deliver state-of-the-art warships. This event marks a new era in shipbuilding for the Indian Navy, further solidifying HSL's reputation as a key player in the nation's defence sector.
The Fleet Support Ship, which will have a displacement of 44,000 tons, is being built with 80% indigenous content, making it a remarkable example of India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing. This ship will be crucial in enhancing the operational capabilities of the Navy by providing vital replenishment services at sea, such as supplying fuel, water, ammunition, and other stores. Its role will significantly extend the reach of the Navy's operations, reinforcing India’s defence preparedness and strategic positioning.
The keel laying of the Fleet Support Ship is considered a historic achievement for HSL, especially following its transfer to the Ministry of Defence in 2010. It is a proud moment for the shipyard, demonstrating not only its growing capabilities but also aligning with the national vision of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'—a self-reliant India.
The project will have a significant impact on the local economy, generating approximately 169 lakh man-days of employment over the next eight years. It is expected to provide skilled job opportunities for workers at the shipyard while also involving the participation of around 550 MSMEs, further strengthening the country’s defence industrial base.
