The security agencies have confirmed that students and Kashmiris across the country are safe amid rumours about harassment following the terror attack that took place on April 22 in Pahalgam district, Kashmir.
“No incidents of harassment of traders have been reported since April 22. The fake news being circulated is with ulterior motives,” the sources said.
They added that there had only been a few concerned calls from students. One was from Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh Muslim University, another was from Punjab's SVS University, and a third was from a student in Uttarakhand. The officials sorted out the issue promptly with regard to safety, and they are not facing threats, sources added.
Authorities confirmed that harassment reports had not been registered from Delhi, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Goa, or any other state or union territory. Appeal was made to all for their vigilance and not to fall prey to disinformation. “All Kashmiri brothers and sisters are safe across the country,” they said.
Following the terror attack, the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association said that more than 1000 distress calls have been made by students from Kashmir studying across India. The association released emergency helpline numbers and assembled a dedicated team on the ground to assist students and coordinate with local authorities.
The JKSA president, Ummar Jamal, condemned the killing in Pahalgam while urging national unity under the tenets of justice. “This tragedy must not become a weapon for hate. We urge students to remain focused on their safety and not get caught in political crossfire," he said.
The recent violence in Pahalgam, where terrorists attacked tourists at Baisaran meadow, resulted in 26 casualties and left many others injured. Consequently, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah sent Cabinet Ministers to several cities to ensure the well-being of Kashmiri residents, especially in terms of measures for students and traders.
On Thursday, Abdullah pleaded to the people of the country not to be under the impression that Kashmiris are their enemies.
“I would like to show solidarity towards the families of the victims who had to go through such a tragic incident… Be it our 25 guests who came here to enjoy their vacation, or that one person from our valley who sacrificed his life to save the people there… I am also thankful to the people of Kashmir who came out after the attack and condemned it,” Abdullah had said.
