On the occasion of Kannada Rajyotsava Day, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced on Friday that the state government would implement measures to ensure that products manufactured in Karnataka bear labels in the Kannada language. The chief minister emphasised the government’s commitment to promoting the Kannada language, stating that the labelling would apply to products from both the private and public sectors. This initiative is part of a broader campaign to strengthen the presence and usage of Kannada across the state.
During an event honouring the 69 recipients of this year's Rajyotsava Awards, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah highlighted the necessity of fostering an environment that promotes the daily use and learning of Kannada.
"We will create an atmosphere of Kannada in Karnataka where people learn the language and use it on a daily basis. This will be the honour that we accord to the language,” he said according to The Indian Express. He highlighted that non-Kannada speakers should also learn the language to strengthen its role in Karnataka’s growth.
Speaking at the 69th Karnataka Rajyotsava event on Friday, he said, “Products manufactured in Karnataka, whether by the private or government sector, typically have labels only in English. In the future, we will aim to include Kannada as well.”
Siddaramaiah also unveiled plans to create a Kannada museum at the historic Attara Kacheri, the former district commissioner's office in Mysuru. This unused building will be transformed into a museum dedicated to highlighting and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Kannada language.
He cautioned against the use of derogatory language toward Kannada, pointing out a troubling trend on social media. He stated that strict actions would be enforced against anyone disrespecting the language and culture of Karnataka.
