Kallakurichi hooch tragedy: BJP alleges ‘state-sponsored murder’ by DMK as 53 people die from consuming illicit arrack

On June 22nd, the death toll from the Kallakurchi Hooch tragedy rose to fifty-three. Additionally, over one hundred people are currently receiving treatment in various hospitals across Tamil Nadu due to the incident. The tragedy has sparked significant uproar from the opposition AIADMK, who are criticising the Chief Minister MK Stalin-led DMK government in the state.
The Kallakurichi District Collector reported that out of the 193 individuals who consumed the illicit arrack, 140 are currently safe. "193 people who consumed the illicit liquor have come to the hospital. Of these, 140 are currently safe, while a few are on ventilators. So far, 53 people have passed away," he stated.
Tamil Nadu authorities have arrested seven individuals in connection with the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy. The state government announced that bootleggers, upon completing their prison sentences, will be rehabilitated if they wish to turn over a new leaf, supported by a dedicated ₹5 crore fund. During the searches, 250 liters of illicit liquor were seized and disposed of in Tiruchirapalli district.
In a session at the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Chief Minister MK Stalin announced that the state government would cover all education and hostel costs for children orphaned by the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy. The Tamil Nadu Assembly witnessed a commotion on 21st June as AIADMK leaders raised slogans demanding a discussion on the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy.
AIADMK legislators staged a walkout from the Tamil Nadu Assembly in protest of the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy. On Friday, AIADMK MLAs were evicted from the House after staging a sit-in protest. AIADMK leaders, dressed in black attire, chanted slogans against the state government in the Assembly and called for the resignation of Chief Minister MK Stalin.
In Tamil Nadu, 53 people lost their lives in the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy on June 19 after consuming methanol mixed with poisonous illicit liquor. Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹10 lakh for the family of each deceased victim and ₹50,000 for those receiving treatment.
