Former Supreme Court Judge Madan B. Lokur has been appointed as the Chairperson of the United Nations Internal Justice Council by Secretary-General António Guterres. The appointment, effective until November 12, 2028, underscores Justice Lokur’s significant role in the administration of justice at the global level.
In a formal letter to Justice Lokur, Secretary-General Guterres conveyed his congratulations, emphasising the pivotal importance of the Council as a cornerstone of the UN’s internal justice system.
Justice Madan B. Lokur has confirmed his appointment as Chairperson of the United Nations Internal Justice Council. The Council includes members from Uruguay, Australia, Austria, Brazil and the United States of America, reflecting its diverse and global representation.
Justice Lokur’s illustrious legal career began with his appointment to the Supreme Court of India on June 4, 2012, where he served until his retirement on December 31, 2018. Prior to his tenure at the apex court, he served as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court and the Andhra Pradesh High Court, demonstrating his extensive experience in the judiciary.
Following his retirement, Justice Lokur made history in August 2019 as the first Indian judge to be appointed to the Supreme Court of Fiji, marking a significant milestone in international judicial cooperation. Beyond his judicial roles, Justice Lokur remains a vocal advocate for civil liberties and judicial independence, reinforcing his commitment to justice and the rule of law.
Justice Madan B. Lokur, born in 1953 served as a distinguished judge of the Supreme Court of India from June 4, 2012, until his retirement on December 30, 2018, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age. His exemplary judicial career and commitment to upholding justice have now been recognised on a global platform with his appointment as Chairperson of the United Nations Internal Justice Council.
