The Lok Sabha has approved an extension for the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the One Nation One Election proposal. Committee chairman PP Chaudhary moved a resolution in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday seeking more time to present the committee's report. He requested that the deadline be extended until the first day of the last week of the Winter Session. Members of the House approved the resolution through a voice vote, allowing the committee to continue its work.

The 41-member Joint Parliamentary Committee is reviewing the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024. The proposed legislation aims to introduce simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and all state legislative assemblies. The government has presented the Bill as part of its plan to bring major electoral reforms.

The committee has been conducting consultations across the country to gather views on the proposal. It has interacted with various stakeholders to examine the possible implementation of simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies and local bodies by 2029. These consultations aim to study the practical, legal and constitutional aspects of the proposal before the committee submits its recommendations.

The Winter Session of Parliament generally begins in the last week of November and concludes before Christmas. With the extension now approved, the committee will continue its consultations and detailed examination of the Bill before presenting its final report during the Winter Session. The report is expected to play an important role in shaping the future of the One Nation One Election proposal.
