Hours after the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly passed a resolution calling for dialogue on the restoration of Article 370, the opposition BJP strongly criticised the move, vowing to disrupt house proceedings until the resolution is suspended.
Leader of the Opposition, Sunil Sharma, asserted that the resolution was not on the Assembly's listed agenda and argued that it demonstrated the intentions of the newly-elected JKNC government in the Union Territory. Speaking to the media, Sharma emphasised that the BJP would not tolerate any effort that aimed to revisit the status of Article 370. He said, "This is an illegal resolution, and until they roll it back, we will continue our protest and not allow the proceedings of the House."
Notably, speaking to the media, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly reaffirmed the BJP’s commitment to restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, though he emphasised that it would occur at an appropriate time. He questioned the legitimacy of the JKNC’s actions, arguing that since Article 370 was abrogated in Parliament—the highest democratic institution—what constitutional authority did the JKNC possess to introduce this resolution?
"Then some people challenged the Parliament's decision in the Supreme Court. The court ruled that the Parliament's decision was right. So what constitutional right do they have to bring this resolution? We have opposed it strongly, and the BJP will continue its protest and not accept it at any cost," Sharma said.
The Leader of the Opposition also criticised Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather, accusing him of undermining the dignity of his position by acting as an "agent" for the ruling National Conference (NC). Furthermore, the BJP leader called on the Congress, as an alliance partner of the JKNC, to clarify its stance on the resolution.
"Congress leaders should come out and clearly say whether they support it or not. If they support it, the people of the country will question them. If not, then without their six MLAs, the resolution as well as the government is in minority," Sharma remarked.
Notably, on November 6, the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly passed a resolution urging the Centre to engage in dialogue with the elected representatives of Jammu and Kashmir to restore the region's special status, sparking considerable uproar. Shortly after the session began, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary introduced the resolution, seeking to reinstate the special status that the Centre had revoked on August 5, 2019.
