Reliance Jio chairman Akash Ambani has outlined the company’s next major bets in satellite communications, 6G technology and artificial intelligence (AI) at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2026.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 10th edition of IMC in New Delhi on October 8 under the theme ‘Scale Without Boundaries’. Speaking on the sidelines, Ambani detailed Jio’s plans to expand connectivity and develop indigenous technologies.
Jio is building an India-based satellite communications system to extend broadband access. Ambani told NewsKerala that the company had demonstrated the system to the communications minister and was pursuing regulatory approvals. Jio sees satellite services as an extension of its broadband business, particularly for homes, though it has not announced a launch timeline.
According to TelecomTalk, Jio showcased a proposed constellation of around 1,600 low-earth-orbit satellites and 23 ground stations across India. The plan aims to connect more than 600,000 villages, including maritime and border regions. The figures remain part of a proposed deployment.
Jio is also preparing for 6G, the next generation of mobile networks. “In fact, in our pre-6G time, we've already filed for patents,” Ambani told News Kerala. He said Jio would contribute significantly to India’s target of securing 10% of global 6G patents.
Jio Platforms had filed 6,817 patents by March 31, 2026, with 1,009 granted, according to figures reported by FinTech BizNews. The company also entered the global top 20 for international patent filings under the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). Ambani attributed this progress to years of investment in deep technology.
AI forms the third part of Jio’s strategy. Ambani told ANI that AI could improve traditional voice and data services for Indian consumers. In 2024, Jio Platforms introduced JioBrain, an AI platform developed over two years by hundreds of engineers. It provides machine learning services across telecom and enterprise networks and supports Jio’s longer-term 6G ambitions.
At IMC, Jio demonstrated self-healing AI-native networks for telecom operators, alongside its telecom technology stack, Jio Education Stack, AI wearables, enterprise AI solutions and JioAIHome, as reported by TelecomTalk.
At Jio’s IPO media meet in Mumbai a week later, Ambani discussed AI tools for transcribing calls and generating summaries in 12 Indian languages. He also outlined plans to offer Jio’s technology to overseas telecom operators as a managed service. He cited more than 7,220 patents filed and a team of over 12,000 engineers.
Jio has around 30 million home broadband customers, with its network reaching nearly 40 million of India’s approximately 300 million households. Ahead of the IPO, Ambani described the listing as “a great responsibility”, Entrepreneur India reported.
