Japan is set to give two Shinkansen train sets, the E5 and E3 models to India, to support the testing phase of the country’s first bullet train corridor. The gifted train sets will play a very important role in preparing the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project for operations, and will also be a memorable event in Indo-Japanese transport collaboration.
According to a report by The Japan Times, the two train sets will arrive in India by early 2026. These trains will not just be used for high-speed trial runs but will also be specially equipped with inspection technology to monitor and collect essential data. The testing will be focused on how the trains perform in India’s unique environment including high temperatures, dust, and other climatic conditions that are vastly different from Japan’s climate.
Advanced Shinkansen Models
The E5 and E3 series are a representation of the top of Japan’s globally respected Shinkansen technology, which is renowned for its speed, safety, and engineering precision. The E5 model, originally launched by East Japan Railway (JR East) in 2011, is capable of speeds up to 320 km/h. It was initially chosen to serve Indian passengers when bullet train services began.
The E3, is an earlier model, but remains highly efficient, especially in terms of compact high-speed routes. This series was designed for “mini-Shinkansen” lines in Japan and exhibits the flexibility and innovation in Japan’s bullet train system. Both models will now serve as India's first trials to real-time, full-scale high-speed train operations.
The Access to Alfa-X
Although India had initially planned to operate the E5 series for regular passenger services on the MAHSR line, cost escalations and schedule delays have led to a shift in focus. Japan is now offering India access to its upcoming E10 model, also known as the Alfa-X, which is a futuristic Shinkansen variant expected to reach speeds of up to 400 km/h.
However, this mode will not be ready in time for the planned partial opening of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train line in August 2027. Until the Alfa-X becomes operational in the early 2030s, the E5 and E3 trains will serve as important trials for both testing and early-stage deployment. The lessons learned from these Trains will directly help in the development and refinement of the E10 design for Indian climatic conditions.
India’s Transformative Trials
This initiative is India’s first hands-on engagement with Japan’s high-speed railway ecosystem, making it a huge deal in the transportation sector of the country. From train engineering to real-time operational dynamics, Indian engineers and railway officials will get a real life look at how Shinkansen technology works in practice.
This move is expected to speed up India’s readiness to adopt and adapt bullet train systems in the long run. The data collected from the E5 and E3 test runs will help India better prepare its infrastructure for future high-speed operations.
