The Japanese military on Tuesday said it had conducted a missile test for the first time on its own territory. Soldiers fired Type-88 surface-to-ship short-range missiles at the Shizunai Anti-Air Firing Range located on Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island.
Officials said around 300 soldiers from the Ground Self-Defence Force’s 1st Artillery Brigade took part in the exercise. The troops fired at an unmanned vessel situated about 40 kilometres off the coast.
Japan plans to deploy cruise missiles with longer range later this year, including Tomahawk missiles.
Earlier, Japan had carried out missile tests outside its territory, including on the territories of defence partners such as the United States and Australia.
Japan conducted this domestic test while pushing ahead with its military build-up to strengthen its strike-back capabilities. The aim was to deter regional threats, especially from China.
According to the Pentagon, China had increased its supply of medium-range ballistic missiles. These weapons are capable of hitting United States military bases located in Japan.
At the same time, North Korea continued its weapons development. It test-fired short-range ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan.
In April, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba agreed to deepen military ties. They said they would cooperate further in response to growing threats from China, North Korea, and Russia.
Japan’s latest missile test marked a shift from past practice. It showed the country’s decision to conduct such military exercises within its own borders instead of relying solely on allied territory.
Officials did not confirm whether Japan planned more domestic tests. But analysts said the move aligned with Tokyo’s broader defence goals.
The missile launch also came amid increased regional tensions. Japan’s government has repeatedly cited security challenges as a reason for updating its military strategy and capabilities.
