Following intelligence alerts about potential terror threats after last week's attacks in Pahalgam, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has shut down 48 of the 87 tourist spots in the Kashmir Valley. Sources say intercepted communications have revealed that specific sleeper cells in the region have been triggered and directed to begin operations after the Pahalgam incident. "In light of the recent militant attack on tourists dated 22.04.2025, reliable inputs from credible sources and sister intelligence agencies suggest that militant organisations are actively planning attacks targeting security forces and non-local individuals in the upcoming days," as per the intelligence information obtained by India Today.
The intelligence report suggests that Pakistan’s intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence or ISI, is planning attacks targeting non-locals, CID officers, and Kashmiri Pandits, especially in the Srinagar and Ganderbal regions. Sources say there are ongoing warnings about militants active in different parts of Kashmir, including across North, Central, and South Kashmir, preparing for selective killings and possibly a major strike, likely as retaliation for security forces demolishing the homes of known terrorists after the Pahalgam attack.
The report also raises concerns over the risk to railway infrastructure, noting that many railway workers in the Valley are from outside the region. Security agencies have advised railway personnel to stay within their camps and barracks to avoid potential threats. Regarding the recent threat, authorities have deployed anti-terror units or anti-fidayeen squads, mainly from the Jammu and Kashmir Police's Special Operations Group, to high-risk tourist spots like Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Dal Lake, which are still open to the public. Security has been ramped up considerably across the region.
On April 22, gunmen believed to be from Pakistan attacked tourists in Baisaran Valley, Pahalgam, killing 26 people, most of whom were vacationers. The incident triggered a mass departure of tourists from Kashmir. Just as visitors had started to return, new threat alerts were issued.
Security forces have launched a large-scale crackdown across the state to track down those responsible for the Pahalgam attack, carrying out coordinated raids and detaining hundreds of suspects and alleged terror supporters. In addition, homes belonging to known militants have been demolished as part of the intensified operation.
At the same time, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is leading the probe into the Pahalgam incident, has begun an on-site investigation, reconstructing the events of the attack. The agency plans to question local staff who were present at the time, including zipline operators, as well as survivors like Rishi Bhatt from Gujarat, whose video managed to capture images of the attackers.
