The Jammu-Kashmir State Election Commission has taken decisive action during the ongoing assembly elections, suspending 23 government officials and seizing a total of Rs 130 crore for violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). Among these officials, 20 were transferred to different tehsils and districts after complaints were made against them for allegedly favouring a political party during the election process. Additionally, the commission has removed six contractual and ad-hoc employees for similar violations.
According to the election office, various enforcement agencies made substantial seizures of cash during the elections. The Police Department led with the highest amount, seizing Rs 107.50 crore. Other significant seizures include Rs 9.88 crore by the Central Goods and Services Tax Department, Rs 8.03 crore by the State Goods and Services Tax Department, Rs 2.06 crore by the Narcotics Control Bureau, Rs 87 lakh by the Income Tax Department, and Rs 50 lakh by the State Excise Department.
Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) PK Pole stated that about 7,088 permissions were granted to political parties and candidates for campaign-related activities. These permissions covered rallies, processions, opening of party offices, and the use of vehicles, banners, flags, pamphlets, and video vans for election campaigns. Special permissions were also granted for helicopters and vehicles used by star campaigners and party leaders.
Pole further revealed that out of 1,263 reported violations of the MCC, 600 cases have been resolved after investigations, with appropriate actions taken. However, 364 cases are still under investigation and will be addressed soon. Additionally, 115 notices have been issued to candidates, political parties, media outlets, and others for violations of the election code. Enforcement agencies also registered 32 FIRs related to the illegal transport of drugs, cash, and liquor during the election period.
The suspensions and seizures are part of the commission's ongoing efforts to ensure the election process remains fair and free from undue influence. By taking strong action against rule breakers, the Jammu-Kashmir Election Commission aims to maintain the integrity of the democratic process during the assembly elections.
