After two explosives-laden drones crashed into the high-security Indian Air Force station at Jammu airport, an alert was sounded in Punjab's border district of Pathankot, news agency PTI reported on Sunday.
Two explosions rocked the high security technical area of Air Force Station Jammu on the intervening night of June 26-27. Two Indian Air Force personnel sustained minor injuries but are out of danger.
Confirming the incidents of blast, the Indian Air Force tweeted on Sunday morning: "Two low intensity explosions were reported early Sunday morning in the technical area of Jammu Air Force Station. One caused minor damage to the roof of a building while the other exploded in an open area. There was no damage to any equipment. Investigation is in progress along with civil agencies."
The first blast ripped off the roof of a building at 1:37 am while the second one was on the ground at 1:42 am. The area was cordoned off by security forces within minutes, reported India Today.
A big hole in the roof of a building inside the Jammu Air Force Station indicates that an aerial attack using drones was part of a plot to target helicopters, an initial assessment report said.
Two suspects have been detained in Satwari area near the Air Force station in connection with the blasts. They have been picked up for interrogation.
Meanwhile, an FIR has also been registered at the Satwari Police station in Jammu under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
“We are on our guard in view of the situation. Whenever there is an incident of this kind, maximum alert is sounded in neighbouring areas," Pathankot's Senior Superintendent of Police, Surendra Lamba, told PTI over phone when asked if additional security measures have been put in place in wake of the Jammu incident.
“We are checking vigorously our inter-state border movement. We have deployed additional forces also,” he said, adding, specialised commandos and SWAT teams of Punjab Police are being deployed strategically.
J&K DGP Dilbagh Singh said that use of drone with payload in both the blasts at Jammu airfield suspected to drop explosive material. "Another IED weighing 5-6 kgs was recovered by Jammu police. This IED was received by LeT outfit operative and was to be planted at some crowded place," he said while speaking to ANI.
Use of drone with payload in both the blasts at Jammu airfield suspected to drop the explosive material. Police have registered an FIR and investigation is on," DGP Dilbagh Singh said, adding that the drone was operated by site near the scene of the attack.
In an exclusive interview with India Today, J&K Director General of Police Dilbagh Singh said that the drone was operated by people near the attack site. He said the conspiracy may have crossed the border but those who executed it were present within the border.
Another IED (improvised explosive device) of five-six kg was recovered by the Jammu and Kashmir Police within hours of the twin explosions that rocked the technical area of the Indian Air Force (IAF) in Jammu's airport in the early hours of Sunday.
According to the police, the recovered IED, which purportedly belonged to a LeT (Lashkar-e-Taiba) outfit, was planted at a crowded location.
"There is another IED of 5/6 kg recovered by the Jammu police. This IED was received by an LeT outfit operative and was to be planted in some crowded place. A major terror attack was averted with this recovery. More suspects are likely to be picked up in this IED case," Dilbag Singh, DGP of Jammu and Kashmir Police, said.
