Jaishankar raises safety of Indian nationals during bilateral conversation with Russia's Lavrov at Astana

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar raised the issue of Indian nationals in the war zone and pressed for their safe return during a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, in Kazakhstan's Astana on July 3. Jaishankar arrived on 2nd July to represent India at the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
Jaishankar shared on X (formerly Twitter): "Good to meet Russian FM Sergey Lavrov in Astana today. Wide-ranging conversation on our bilateral partnership and contemporary issues. Noted the progress in many areas since our last meeting in December 2023."
The meeting between the two foreign ministers occurred just days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's planned visit to Moscow to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In his post on X, Jaishankar highlighted, "Raised our strong concern on Indian nationals who are currently in the war zone. Pressed for their safe and expeditious return," along with photos from the meeting. This engagement underscores India's ongoing diplomatic efforts to ensure the safety of its citizens amidst geopolitical tensions.
The External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, also discussed the global strategic landscape and exchanged assessments and views with Sergey Lavrov during their meeting.
Additionally, on 2nd July, Jaishankar met with Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, Murat Nurtleu, to discuss expanding the Strategic Partnership and India's increasing engagement with Central Asia in various formats. This meeting highlights India's proactive approach to strengthening bilateral and regional relationships.
During his meeting with Murat Nurtleu, who also serves as Kazakhstan's Foreign Minister, S. Jaishankar exchanged views on regional and global issues. This discussion further emphasised the strategic dialogue and cooperation between India and Kazakhstan, as well as India's commitment to enhancing its presence and influence in Central Asia.
