Jaishankar holds meeting with SCO secretary general, highlights India's contributions

On Wednesday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a meeting with Nurlan Yermekbayev, the Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), in Delhi. Jaishankar congratulated Yermekbayev on taking up the new role. During the talk, India's work in the SCO was also discussed, according to EAM.
"Delighted to meet SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev in Delhi this evening. Congratulated him on assuming this new responsibility. Discussed India's work in SCO and building of SECURE SCO," wrote Jaishankar in a post on social media platform X. Tanmay Lal, the Secretary (West) of the Ministry of External Affairs, met with Nurlan Yermekbayev, the recently appointed Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), earlier on Tuesday to examine potential areas of collaboration.
This was Yermekbayev's inaugural official visit to India. In a post on X, the Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal stated, "Secy(West) Tanmaya Lal met the newly appointed SCO Secretary-General Mr. Nurlan Yermekbayev on his first official visit to India. Discussions focused on various avenues of cooperation in SCO." The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, "Warm welcome to Mr. Nurlan Yermekbayev, Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), on his first official visit to India." "This visit underscores our commitment to enhancing regional cooperation, security, and trade & economic development," added the MEA.
On October 16, 2024, EAM Jaishankar signed eight key documents showcasing India's contributions during the 23rd SCO Council of Heads of Government meeting in Islamabad. In his speech, Jaishankar emphasised India's own national and international projects that are "strongly relevant for the SCO." He also discussed the importance of digital public infrastructure, women-led development, the International Solar Alliance, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, Mission LiFE, yoga and promoting millets to the Global Biofuel Alliance and the International Big Cat Alliance. The External Affairs Minister also emphasised the importance of fair and balanced connectivity projects that follow international law and align with the objectives of the UN Charter and the SCO Charter.
