External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar highlights the clarity of India's foreign policy choices under the Narendra Modi government, particularly in the context of navigating complex issues like the Ukraine conflict. Responding to questions from influencer Raj Shamani, who has a significant following on YouTube, Jaishankar explains the rationale behind India's firm stance, including the decision to purchase Russian crude openly rather than clandestinely.
By openly acknowledging the purchase of Russian oil, Jaishankar suggests that India is transparent about its actions on the global stage and is committed to maintaining credibility in its foreign relations. This stance indicates that India prioritises maintaining its strategic interests while also adhering to principles of transparency and accountability. The interview sheds light on the Modi government's approach to foreign policy and its efforts to navigate global challenges while staying true to India's national interests.
The relationship between India and Russia has indeed been robust and longstanding, particularly in the realm of defense cooperation, which has been a cornerstone of India's foreign policy. While historically Russia has been a minor exporter of fuel to India, the dynamics shifted notably after the commencement of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022. In response to the evolving geopolitical landscape, India began increasing its shipments of fuel from Moscow.
Despite expanding trade ties with Russia, India has remained consistent in its calls for the cessation of hostilities in Ukraine, emphasizing the need for peace and stability in the region. Regarding its imports of Russian oil, India has reiterated its commitment to making decisions based on its national interest. This stance underscores India's pragmatic approach to foreign policy, where strategic considerations are weighed alongside broader diplomatic objectives.
In navigating its relationship with Russia amidst global tensions, India emphasizes its sovereignty and the imperative to safeguard its interests while advocating for peace and stability on the international stage. This nuanced approach reflects India's efforts to balance its strategic partnerships with its commitment to multilateralism and the principles of international law.
The external affairs minister asserted that a country like India should take a clear stand on issues like the Russian oil trade, which is key for the country’s energy security. “Today, we are a big country. We are the fifth-largest economy and we are the most populous country. We are looking at a great future ahead. You cannot rise without being clear," he added.
