On Monday, Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon resulted in the death of a prominent Hamas leader. This attack is part of an ongoing increase in violence from Israel. Additionally, three members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine were also killed in Beirut, marking the first time such strikes have occurred within the city limits.
Fateh Sherif Abu el-Amin, who was recognised as the head of Hamas in Lebanon, was killed along with his family when an explosion in a Tyre refugee camp struck their home. In an unprecedented strike, Israeli missiles also targeted a building in the centre of Beirut early on Monday. The strike claimed the lives of three PFLP members. According to Reuters eyewitnesses, the upper floor of an apartment building was struck by the strike.
Following the death on Friday of Hezbollah's long-elusive leader Hassan Nasrallah, the attacks indicate that Israel will not be relenting in its campaign to immobilize its adversaries in Lebanon and throughout the region. The largest-ever setback to Iran's network of proxy militias that stretches from Gaza to Yemen, Syria, and Iraq, according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
According to Israel, it is getting ready to launch a ground invasion into southern Lebanon. The US and other major powers worry that this move could lead to a protracted conflict that could put Tehran and Washington squarely against each other. According to local officials, Israeli strikes on Lebanon during the last two weeks have resulted in at least 1,000 deaths—100 of them in the last day alone—and hundreds of thousands of people being displaced from their homes.
