Iran's judiciary said Israeli military forces struck Tehran's Evin prison and damaged parts of the facility which held many political detainees.
Mizan news agency, operated by Iran's judiciary, reported that the situation on the ground was "under control" after the attack. CCTV footage showed an explosion at one of the prison’s gates. State television broadcast images of first responders carrying a casualty and searching for survivors under a flattened building.
Israel’s defence minister said the military targeted “regime targets and agencies of government repression” across Tehran, including Evin prison.
The Israeli military said it also struck access routes to the Fordo uranium enrichment plant located south of Tehran.
The attack came a day after United States aircraft dropped bunker-busting bombs on Iran’s underground nuclear facility.
On Monday, Iranian ballistic missiles hit several locations across Israel. One missile struck an industrial area in the coastal city of Ashdod, near a power station. The attack disrupted electricity supplies in some parts of the city.
Ten days earlier, Israel launched a large-scale air campaign against Iran to remove what it called the existential threats posed by Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.
Iran’s health ministry stated that Israeli strikes had killed around 500 people so far. But one human rights group put the number of deaths at 950.
Israeli authorities said that missile strikes by Iran on Israeli cities had killed 24 people.
