Israeli police informed that bombs had exploded three buses in the central city of Bat Yam on Thursday evening, and a local official said no casualties had happened so far.
Israel’s Defence Minister Katz blamed "Palestinian terrorist organisations" for the explosion, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for a security meeting.
"Preliminary report - Suspected terror attack. Multiple reports have been received of explosions involving several buses at different locations in Bat Yam," a statement came from the police.
According to a police spokesman speaking to AFP, three devices blasted on buses while authorities defused two others. In response, a significant police force was deployed to track down the suspects, as stated in an official police statement.
"Police bomb disposal units are scanning for additional suspicious objects. We urge the public to avoid the areas and remain alert for any suspicious items," the statement further said.
Bat Yam Mayor Tzvika Brot stated in a video message, "No injured in these incidents". television footage from Israeli networks showed one bus completely burnt and another still on fire. Following the explosions, Israeli media reported that bus drivers across the country were instructed to stop and check their vehicles for any additional explosive devices.
In a televised briefing, central Israel's police commander, Haim Sargarof, noted that the explosives used in the blasts were similar to those found in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Meanwhile, Netanyahu's office announced that he would hold a security meeting in response to the explosion.
"Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been receiving ongoing updates from his military secretary on the IED (improvised-explosive-device) incidents in the Dan (central) area and will soon hold a security assessment," the office stated in a readout.
From the prime minister's office, an official conveyed Netanyahu "views the placing of explosives on buses as a severe incident and will order decisive action against terror elements in the West Bank".
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has ordered the military to intensify its operations across occupied territories, with a particular focus on refugee camps. "In light of the serious attempted attacks in the Gush Dan (central) area by Palestinian terrorist organisations against the civilian population in Israel, I have instructed the IDF (military) to intensify operations to thwart terrorism in the Tulkarem refugee camp and all the refugee camps in Judea and Samaria," mentioned Katz in a statement where he used the biblical term for the West Bank.
For several weeks, the military has been conducting daily raids in multiple cities and refugee camps across the West Bank, targeting Palestinian militants. Violence in the region, which Israel has controlled since 1967, has intensified following the outbreak of war in Gaza in October 2023.
Since the war began, Israeli forces or settlers have killed at least 897 Palestinians, including militants, according to an AFP tally based on data from the Palestinian health ministry in Ramallah.
At least 32 Israelis, including soldiers, have lost their lives in Palestinian attacks or clashes during Israeli operations in the West Bank, as per official Israeli figures.
