Early Tuesday, Israel's military reported multiple attempts to intercept a missile launched from Yemen, triggering warning sirens across central Israel. This incident occurred less than 24 hours after Yemen's Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for firing a missile towards Tel Aviv, which Israeli forces successfully intercepted.
"Following the sirens that sounded in a number of areas in central Israel, several attempts were made to intercept a missile that was launched from Yemen," the military said in a statement issued around 3:30 am (0130 GMT).
The Magen David Adom emergency service in Israel said there were no injuries from the missile or falling debris, but some people suffered injuries when running to shelters.
The announcement followed a Monday night attack where a projectile launched from Yemen was intercepted "prior to crossing into Israeli territory," according to the Israeli military. Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for firing a "hypersonic missile" at a target in "occupied Jaffa," referring to Tel Aviv, Israel's commercial hub.
The Houthi rebels also reported launching four drones towards the same area, vowing to continue their operations until "the end of the aggression against the Palestinians."
Since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023, Yemen's Houthi rebels have repeatedly launched missiles and drones at Israel, framing their actions as a demonstration of solidarity with the Palestinians. The Houthi group, which controls significant portions of Yemen, has faced retaliatory strikes from Israel, including attacks on targets in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa.
