Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered two rescue planes to be sent to Amsterdam right away after a "very violent incident" targeting Israeli citizens, his office announced on Friday.
The attacks are believed to be related to a football game. According to a second statement from the prime minister's office, Israel's national security ministry has also advised its citizens in the Dutch city to remain in their hotel rooms in the wake of the attacks. The Israeli Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, wrote on X that "fans who went to see a football game, encountered anti-Semitism and were attacked with unimaginable cruelty just because of their Jewishness and Israeliness."
After the game, local police reported that 57 people had been detained as pro-Palestinian protesters attempted to enter the Johan Cruyff stadium despite the city's ban on their protests. Although several altercations were reported in the city centre during the night, police said that fans had left the stadium without any problems. Following the football match in which Ajax Amsterdam, a team traditionally associated with Jews, defeated Maccabi Tel Aviv 5-0, the Israeli military announced that it was getting ready to launch a rescue operation right away with the help of the Dutch government.
"The mission will be deployed using cargo aircraft and include medical and rescue teams," the IDF said. Social media footage revealed a man being beaten and crowds running through the streets. The Dutch foreign ministry has not yet commented on the statements made by the Israeli government. Emotions have been running high both in the Middle East and around the world since the Palestinian militant group Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. The attack resulted in 1,200 Israeli deaths and more than 250 hostages taken, according to Israel.
At least 43,469 Palestinians have been killed and 102,561 injured in Gaza due to Israel's military response to a Hamas attack, according to health officials in Gaza. The ongoing conflict has led to protests supporting both sides in Europe and the United States, and there have been attacks on both Arabs and Jews. Geert Wilders, the leader of the largest party in the Dutch government, condemned attacks reported in Amsterdam in a post on X. "Ashamed that this can happen in The Netherlands. Totally unacceptable," he said.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar asked the Dutch government to assist Israeli citizens in getting to the airport safely. Saar made this request during a phone call with his Dutch counterpart, Caspar Veldkamp, on Friday.
