The Israeli government removed a map of India from its official website after facing backlash on social media for incorrectly showing Jammu and Kashmir.
An Indian influencer brought up the issue on social media platform X, leading to the removal of the map. “India stands with Israel. But does Israel stand with India? Note the map of India (pay attention to Jammu & Kashmir) on Israel’s official website,” wrote Abhijit Chavda on X, who has nearly two lakh Instagram followers.
Israel's ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, stated that the inaccurate map was a "website editor's mistake" in response to complaints expressed by social media users. “Thank you for noticing. It has been taken down,” he said. Chavda expressed gratitude to the Israeli government for removing the map.
“Greatly appreciate the Government of Israel’s proactive step to remove the incorrect map of India. Demonstrates Israel’s friendship with India, and genuine desire to strengthen the friendship. India stands with Israel,” he stated. Amidst its involvement in several fronts of conflict in West Asia, Indians are expressing gratitude for Israel's timely response and the overwhelming social media support for the Jewish state.
Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first world leaders to denounce the attacks and offer support to the Jewish state following Hamas's October attack on Israel. In keeping with its stance to end the worsening crisis in the Middle East, India is emphasising the need for communication and diplomacy as the first anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack draws closer.
India has expressed concern over the number of civilian casualties in the conflict, even as it condemns the terrorist act against Israel on October 7. India made a case for Israel's right to respond to violence committed on its territory while focusing on the need for peace and humanitarian aid for the Palestinian people, even before the situation in West Asia started to worsen.
