Israel’s Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, announced on Wednesday that UN Secretary-General António Guterres has been barred from entering Israel. The decision comes in response to Guterres’s failure to “unequivocally condemn” Iran’s extensive missile attack on the country.
“Anyone who cannot unequivocally condemn Iran’s heinous attack on Israel, as nearly all the countries of the world have done, does not deserve to set foot on Israeli soil,” said Katz.
“Israel will continue to defend its citizens and uphold its national dignity, with or without Antonio Guterres.”
“A Secretary-General who gives backing to terrorists, rapists, and murderers from Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and now Iran-the mothership of global terror-will be remembered as a stain on the history of the UN. Israel will continue to defend its citizens and uphold its national dignity, with or without António Guterres,” the post read.
This decision follows Iran’s launch of more than 400 missiles towards Israel just a day earlier, prompting civilians to seek refuge in bomb shelters and causing the temporary closure of the country’s airspace.
In the aftermath of the missile attack on Israel, Guterres condemned the escalation of tensions in the Middle East. After the missile attack on Israel, Guterres condemned the escalation of tensions in the Middle East. In a post on X, he wrote, "I condemn the broadening of the Middle East conflict with escalation after escalation. This must stop. We absolutely need a ceasefire.”
Israel Katz also stated that Guterres’ failure to directly address Iran’s actions has resulted in him being declared persona non grata in Israel.
