On February 6, 2026, a deadly suicide blast struck a crowded Shia meeting hall in Islamabad, Pakistan, leaving many people dead and hundreds wounded, officials and media reported. The explosion happened at the Terlai Imambargah in the Shehzad Town area of the federal capital just as people were gathered for Friday prayers, causing panic and heavy casualties.
According to news outlet Dawn, at least 31 people were killed and more than 160 others were injured in the blast at the Shia meeting hall, with many of the wounded in serious condition. The explosion was described by local sources as a suicide blast targeting worshippers at the crowded event.
Police and rescue teams rushed to the scene immediately after the explosion to control the situation and help the injured. Emergency services carried out relief operations and began evacuating victims to hospitals.
Following the blast, authorities declared an emergency at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences and other medical facilities to handle the large number of casualties. The injured were being treated at various hospitals in Islamabad, and medical staff worked to save those with critical injuries.
Television footage and social media videos shared clips of police officers, medical responders, and local people carrying the wounded on stretchers and rushing them into ambulances. These scenes showed the chaos that followed the explosion at the religious gathering.
Political leaders and religious figures strongly condemned the attack. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, Pakistan’s parliamentary affairs minister, took to X (formerly Twitter) to denounce the blast, calling it a “cowardly act” and expressing deep sorrow over the loss of life. He said the nation grieved with the families of the victims and vowed that such violence would not be tolerated.
Another voice of sorrow came from Senate opposition leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, who also spoke on X. He described the incident as a serious security failure and warned that attacks on places of worship “cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.” His remarks reflected widespread anger and grief among the public and political leaders alike.
This tragic blast occurred just days after Pakistani forces clashed with the Balochistan Liberation Army, resulting in heavy casualties on both sides, according to previous reports. The recent surge in violence has heightened fears of instability in parts of the country.
The Islamabad explosion was the second blast reported in the capital in recent months. In November 2025, a suicide blast had also rocked the federal capital, killing twelve people. That earlier attack took place outside the Islamabad district court complex, killing civilians and causing widespread alarm.
Government officials have not yet released a detailed statement on who might be responsible for the Islamabad blast. Investigations were reported to be underway, and security forces were working to determine the exact cause and whether the attacker had links to any known militant groups.
Witnesses at the scene said the explosion was so powerful that it shook nearby buildings and sent worshippers running in every direction. One local resident said people were initially confused and in shock, not knowing what had happened until emergency sirens started ringing and rescue teams arrived.
In the aftermath, many families rushed to hospitals seeking information about their loved ones, while others organized blood donations to help the injured. The community in Islamabad and across Pakistan expressed deep sadness and called for unity in the face of such violence.
As of now, authorities continue to investigate the blast, collect evidence, and support the victims’ families. The nation remains on alert after this devastating attack on a place of worship, with many leaders urging for peace and stronger measures to protect all citizens.
