The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), together with the Adani Group, is serving meals to almost one lakh people every day at the ongoing Maha Kumbh, according to an official from the spiritual organisation.
According to ISKCON's Director (CSR), Madhukant Das, the organisation's one kitchen at a camp on Harshvardhan Marg here can feed 30,000–35,000 people in a single session, and over a lakh people are fed in three sessions daily. The dishes at ISKCON, which include dal, chole or rajma, rice, roti, and veggies, as well as desserts like boondi laddu or halwa, are all perfectly balanced. "These meals taste amazing as they are made on a clay stove over a fire of wood and cow dung cakes," he said.
Das mentioned that meals are being given out at 40 locations throughout Prayagraj, including bus stands, railway stations and various holding areas, where large crowds of devotees are gathered on the main bathing days. He added that 15,000 workers who are cleaning the fair and its environs are also receiving the food. Food is made and given from the three kitchens that ISKCON has set up across Prayagraj: Khusrobagh, which is close to the Prayagraj intersection; Netra Kumbh, which is in Sector 6; and the ISKCON temple premises, which is in Sector 19. ISKCON participates in every Kumbh, and as part of their preparations, cow dung cakes are made six months before the fair begins. Das also mentioned that 100 vehicles have been arranged for food distribution, which have been provided by the Adani Group.
“Three to three and a half thousand volunteers from Adani Group and ISKCON are providing their services. The entire project is environment friendly, and plastic is not being used anywhere in this 45-day fair,” he added. An ISKCON official mentioned that with the Adani Group's partnership, the capacity to distribute food prasad has increased by 8-10 times. An Adani Group official also shared that the company's employees are very excited about serving at the Maha Kumbh Mela. The company created a portal for people to volunteer, and within just one day, 4,000 people applied, which was much more than they had anticipated. Adani Group leaders at the vice president and general manager levels will also be attending this fair, according to the officials. Batches of 100 to 150 firm officials and staff are arriving to serve.
