Iran's envoy to India assures Indians aboard ship seized by Tehran are not detained, all free to depart

Iran's envoy to India, Iraj Elahi, clarified that the Indian nationals, who were crew members of MSC Aries, are not under detention and are free to leave.
This update follows the arrival of Ann Tessa Joseph, a woman cadet, at Cochin International Airport. Joseph was one of the 17 Indians aboard the container vessel MSC Aries.
Iran's envoy to India, Iraj Elahi, confirmed to ANI that all 17 Indian crew members aboard the Israel-linked cargo ship 'MSC Aries', seized by Iran on April 13, are free to return to India under the command of the ship's captain.
Ann Tessa Joseph, a deck cadet from Thrissur, Kerala, safely returned to India on Thursday afternoon, marking a significant diplomatic victory for New Delhi. She was received by the Regional Passport Officer of Cochin upon her arrival at Cochin International Airport.
The MEA stated that the Indian mission in Tehran is in contact with the remaining 16 Indian crew members of the vessel. The MEA assured that the crew members are in good health and are maintaining communication with their families in India. Additionally, the Indian Mission is coordinating with Iranian authorities to ensure the well-being of the remaining crew members.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had previously discussed the matter with his Iranian counterpart, Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar commended the efforts of the Indian embassy in Iran, expressing satisfaction over the safe return of Ann Tessa Joseph to India. Jaishankar, acknowledging the embassy's work, reiterated the reliability of #ModiKiGuarantee, both domestically and internationally.
Following Iran's direct attack on Israel with missiles and drones, which heightened tensions in West Asia, EAM Jaishankar engaged in discussions with his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian. The two leaders addressed the ongoing situation in the region, emphasising the necessity for restraint and a return to diplomatic dialogue.
Jaishankar took to his official social media handle to share insights from the conversation, highlighting the importance of de-escalation and the imperative of diplomatic resolutions. He affirmed mutual agreement to maintain communication and collaboration on the matter.
The MSC Aries, with 17 Indian nationals onboard, was seized by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy on April 13 near the Strait of Hormuz. The Indian Mission in Tehran is in contact with the remaining 16 crew members, who are reported to be in good health and in touch with their families.
