Potential criminal charges have been brought against an Iranian newspaper that implied the audience needed to wait for President Masoud Pezeshkian to relax internet restrictions with the patience of the biblical character job.
The case against the pro-reform newspaper Ham Mihan is one of the first issues of media freedom under Pezeshkian, a reformist who has promised to reduce police actions against women wearing the hijab and improve relations with Western countries.
Tehran's prosecutor's office has filed charges against the publication, according to a report released Thursday by the semiofficial Mehr news agency. Although certain publications have previously been instructed to cease their publishing due to disagreements with Iran's theocracy, it is still unknown what specific fines or punishments the publication could face.
The job was depicted in the Wednesday cartoon standing in front of Cabinet spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani, posing the following query: “Excuse me, this filtering is not solved?” Iranians use that term in referring to the internet restrictions, which slow foreign websites and speed those within Iran’s so-called “halal net.”
However, Mohajerani responded with a sharp answer. "No, be patient a little bit more, it will be solved," was Mohajerani's response in the cartoon.
