According to Maulana Mohammad Abolghassem Doulabi, a prominent Iranian cleric, around 50,000 mosques out of the total 75,000 in the country have been closed, reflecting a decline in attendance. The closure of such a significant number of mosques has raised concerns about the waning interest of people in religious activities within Iranian society.
Maulana Doulabi, who serves as a liaison between the administration of Ebrahim Raisi and the country's seminaries, expressed his distress over the situation. He emphasized that the decline in religiosity undermines the legitimacy of a government based on religious principles. People's perception of religion plays a crucial role in their decision to either embrace or distance themselves from it. Factors such as the humiliation of individuals in the name of religion, manipulation of religious teachings, and the association of poverty with religious practices were cited as reasons for disillusionment.
This vocalized concern by the prominent cleric reflects the growing weariness among Iranians, particularly in light of the government's heavy-handed enforcement of Islamic laws. Instances of violent protests have been witnessed since September of the previous year, triggered by the tragic death of Mahsa Amini while under the custody of the morality police, stemming from her alleged improper hijab usage.
Reports indicate that Iran currently has over 60% of its mosques closed due to a lack of devotees for prayer. The perception of religion and its repercussions when confronted have a significant impact on individuals' decisions to either remain within a religious framework or seek alternative paths.
It is important to note that Iran operates under strict Islamic law, where even minor deviations can result in severe penalties. The prevailing circumstances reflect the challenges faced by the Iranian government as it seeks to maintain religious authority amidst a growing disinterest and dissent within society.
